Airport Service Technician

This position performs semi-skilled tasks related to refueling and repositioning aircraft as well as providing day-to-day maintenance and repair of infrastructure at the Airport.  This position reports to the Airport Manager or designee.
 

The following duties are normal for this position.  These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.  Other duties may be required and assigned.
 

• Responsible for greeting, parking, wing walking, and marshaling aircraft arriving or departing.  Performs aircraft refueling in a safe and efficient manner while providing superior customer service.  Reports any incident involving damage to aircraft or incorrect fueling immediately.  Ensures that, to the best of the employee's abilities and knowledge, every aircraft serviced is safe for flight.
• Inspects and maintains fuel storage and delivery systems to ensure purity of fuel, proper functioning of safety devices, safety of personnel & equipment, appropriate inventory levels, and longevity of service life.  Performs quality control checks on fuel. 
• Inspects and maintains mobile fuel delivery systems, vehicles, and small equipment to ensure proper functioning of safety devices, safety of personnel & equipment, and longevity of service life. 
• Performs regular airfield inspections to ensure pavement is free of FOD, is in acceptable condition for aircraft operations and is properly marked and/or lighted. Initiates repairs when discrepancies are found. Records tasks completed using work order software. Operates snow removal equipment to ensure pavement surfaces are clear of contaminants during business hours. 
• Responds to emergencies and incidents on the airfield and notifies Airport Manager or proper authorities.  Is aware of and maintains airport security procedures, reporting any violations to the supervisor or appropriate authorities.
• Performs general landscaping work including mowing, trimming, weeding, mulching, and planting to maintain Airport grounds.  Inspects and maintains Airport facilities including offices, hangars, pavements, lighting systems, and other Airport fixed equipment.  Prepares and paints surfaces both interior and exterior.  Cleans facilities including offices, shops, and bathrooms.  Removes trash from public spaces.  Ensures that resources are not wasted. 
• Performs various standard tasks using a wide variety of manual and powered equipment including, but not limited to: drills, power saws, shovels, rakes, mowers, string trimmers, wheelbarrows, tampers, rototillers, compressors, and tractors.  Drives a variety of light to medium duty vehicles on a daily basis and receives training in the operation and care of vehicles and equipment. 
•  Keeps and maintains all records and documentation of work performed.

Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
 
High school diploma or equivalent, with one-year aviation or fuel handling experience or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities will be considered.  Must possess an Illinois Class 'D' driver's license.  
Language Ability and Interpersonal Communication

• Ability to communicate orally and to read and understand use, operation, and maintenance instructions provided by manufacturers.
• Able to communicate effectively via telephone, two-way radio, and hand signals.

Judgement and Situational Reasoning Ability

• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written and oral instructions.
• Ability to utilize a variety of manual and power equipment.
• Ability to work independently and complete daily activities according to work schedules.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools and reach with hands and arms.
• Ability to climb ladders and work at heights or in enclosed spaces.
• Ability to stand and ambulate over rugged terrain.
• Must have sufficient visual ability to operate equipment and trucks during daylight and night hours to observe unsafe roadways, to read reports and correspondence.  Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
• Ability to maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include climbing stairs/ladders, walking, crouching, crawling, stooping, bending, twisting, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time, operating assigned equipment and lifting heavy objects.
• Ability to recognize and identify similarities or differences between characteristics of colors, shapes, sounds, and textures associated with job-related objects, materials, and tasks.

Environmental Adaptability

• Ability to work in outside weather conditions with exposure to cold, heat, wet and/or humid conditions.
• Ability to work near moving mechanical parts and vibration that may produce loud noises.
