What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lab Assistant/Phlebotomist Full-Time-LMCH position at LAKE MARTIN COMMUNITY HOSPITAL?
Lake Martin Community Hospital is looking to hire a full-time 2nd Shift Lab Assistant/Phlebotomist.
Hours are from 2pm-10pm with potential need to cover some day shifts.
Pay is $12-$15 per hour
Pay is to be determined based off experience.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES:
- Must be able to draw venous/finger stick blood samples and arterial blood gases according to existing laboratory polices, administer post-phlebotomy care to all patients, and is aware of complications that might occur from these procedures.
- Following the established laboratory protocol, properly labels all specimen tubes and processes all accompanying request forms/electronic orders, (LabDaq).
- Orders requested tests in the lab management system (LabDaq). Processes daily reports for physicians, clinics and medical records.
- Prepares specimens for analysis and/or shipment to reference laboratory.
- Prepares daily specimen shipment to reference laboratory, prints manifest and verifies accuracy of shipment.
- Performs clerical duties including: laboratory turn-around-time data, verification of billing charges, answering the telephone and directing calls, managing faxes and filling reports/requests.
- Maintains a neat and well-stocked phlebotomy tray and drawing room. Deficiencies in phlebotomy supplies are reported to the lab director/chief tech as needed.
- Orders reference laboratory supplies each week or as needed.
- Performs current CLIA waved procedures including urinalysis dipstick, occult blood, urine pregnancy test, Rapid Strep, BNP and any future CLIA waived tests after being properly trained.
- Dispenses courier for specimen pickup or delivery to the other medical institutions.
- Assists in daily inventory of general supplies, records need for supplies, reports need for emergency supplies to lab director and/or chief tech or prepares and places orders.
- Maintains general housekeeping of laboratory.
- Maintains tact and courtesy in dealing with patients/visitors and physicians.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other Departments, staff, employees and the public.
- Preserves the confidential nature of items of which he/she has knowledge.
- Represents a caring, friendly and professional attitude to the patient/family or public that he/she has contact with.
- Understands and abides by all hospital and department safety procedures.
- Follows established hospital policies and infection control program.
- Fills position as the safety representative for the laboratory. Attends monthly safety meetings, maintains monthly safety meeting file and reports back to the lab director/chief tech. Maintains laboratory safety program.
- Fills the position as A.W.A.R.E. group representative. Attends monthly meetings and reports findings to the laboratory department.
- Works overtime and other shifts as required by scheduling and staffing deficiencies.
- Assumes responsibility for self-improvement by attendance at in-service classes, staff meetings and education related to personal growth and departmental needs.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Lab Director and/or Chief Technician.
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
· Ability to communicate and understand medical terminology and to understand and carry out detailed oral and written instructions.
· Interpersonal skills required to instruct patients and their families, as well as, professional interaction with a variety of hospital personnel.
· Ability to walk and stand frequently.
· Knowledge of hospital policies and procedures, fire, safety, disaster plans and infection control policies.
· Knowledge of patient rights.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
· Works in clean, air conditioned environment inside, protected from weather conditions.
· Frequent contact with water (hand washing and cleaning), bio-hazardous (OSHA regulated) body fluids and hazardous chemicals.
· Work requires standing and walking frequently.
· Work is of medium physical demand, frequently requiring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching and walking (frequently means up to 75% of the time)
· Work requires hearing ability and visual acuity.
· Subject to a fast paced, high stressed routine.
· Possible bio-hazard exposure to communicable diseases.
· Hazardous working conditions in which individual is exposed to definite risk of bodily injury through contact with moving instrumentation, chemicals and/or bodily fluids.
