PURPOSE: To serve as the chief administrator of the high school in developing and implementing policies, programs, curriculum activities, and budgets in a manner that promotes the educational development of each student and the professional development of each staff member.

 

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK

  • Utilizes data to drive best practice implementation and student outcomes
  • Supervises the coordination, implementation, evaluation and improvement of the instructional program
  • Cultivates and maintains positive school culture
  • Maintains a safe and orderly school climate conducive to learning and characterized by fair and appropriate student discipline, by positive and supportive professional relationships with staff, and by open and informative communications with parents
  • Develops a plan to support diverse learners and collaborates with Director of Academics and Director of Student Services
  • Cooperates with all appropriate administrative personnel, teaching staff, parents, students, and others to provide the best education for all students
  • Organizes the building efficiently and effectively to promote smooth operations supporting school programs, staff operations and pupil involvement
  • Promotes professional development of each staff member through the use of meaningful performance appraisal, relevant in-service training, realistic goal setting, and an on-going process of observation and feedback
  • Schedules time devoted to instructional leadership
  • Screens candidates and makes employment recommendations to the Managing Director
  • Evaluates the performance of all certified staff assigned under direct supervision, including the school’s assistant principals
  • Maintains an effective process for acquiring, scheduling and evaluating substitute teachers
  • Coordinates a positive public relations program with Director of Community Relations, stressing open and effective communication with all stakeholders
  • Organizes and administers the school based upon a sound understanding of the approved policies of the Board of Education
  • Serves as a liaison to the PTO, Board strategic committees, and to stakeholders for the interpretation of the school’s programs and policies
  • Plans and coordinates the use of school facilities to best meet the needs of the school and the community
  • Manages, directs and maintains records on the materials, supplies and equipment which are necessary to carry out the daily school routine
  • Develops procedures to safeguard the buildings, furnishings, materials and equipment from misuse and damage
  • Monitors and develops procedures for cleanliness and prompt repair of facilities and equipment
  • Understands and follows established procedures in the areas of financial planning and collaborates with Director of Business Services to prioritize student and staff impact and outcomes
  • Completes promptly and accurately all special duties and assigned reports
  • Supervises attendance records and periodically reviews those records to ensure that all school staff members are following State requirements and are reporting those data appropriately and accurately 
  • Understands and complies with all NCDPI requirements regarding educational leadership and school improvement planning
  • Communicates with the central office administration regarding all matters in the school and community that may have ramifications for the Board of Education or for the District
  • Works effectively with the Athletic Director and club sponsors to coordinate and supervise all extracurricular activities
  • Performs all other duties commensurate with the position and that may be assigned by the Superintendent

                                  

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Conceptualizes and understands the broad goals of the school and develops appropriate plans to carry out the total school program
  • Understands current school operating conditions and is able to ensure that the school program is compatible with the legal, financial, and organizational requirements of the School System and of the State
  • Understands the history and general workings of NC Charter Schools
  • Understands the current NC/LNCS system for staff performance appraisal, and has the ability to assist staff in skill development
  • Communicates effectively with all stakeholders
  • Effectively works with diverse groups to solve problems or resolve issues
  • Multi-tasks and responds promptly and professionally within an active school environment
  • Uses data to direct student, staff and organizational decision making
  • Understands the system’s organizational structure and follows established line of authority

 

SUGGESTED EDUCATION, CERTIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Master’s Degree in School Administration
  • Meets qualification requirements for or possesses NC licensure for School Principal (School Administrator)
  • Expectation of prior experience as a successful classroom teacher
  • Documented success as a high school assistant principal or high school principal is required
