We are seeking a Fabrication Supervisor to lead and supervise the daily operations of the machine shop and welding departments, ensuring efficiency and operational excellence while also fulfilling responsibilities as a welder. They will fabricate custom cryostats following vacuum leak-tight welding/soldering procedures This role also involves collaborating with Engineering to improve design for manufacturability.

About the Role:
We are seeking a Fabrication Supervisor to lead and supervise the daily operations of the machine shop and welding departments, ensuring efficiency and operational excellence while also fulfilling responsibilities as a welder. They will fabricate custom cryostats following vacuum leak-tight welding/soldering procedures This role also involves collaborating with Engineering to improve design for manufacturability.
Key Responsibilities:
- Welding Operations: Operate a wide array of welding tools to fabricate parts, fixtures, and assemblies. Use SolidWorks to design and fabricate fixtures for assembly and manufacturing. Interpret solid models, prints, sketches, and engineering instructions.
- Department Leadership and Supervision: Lead the welding department and machine shop, maintaining a safe and clean work environment, ensuring adherence to safety and quality requirements. Distribute work to team members to optimize manufacturing flow and achieve production goals. Lead the standardization of welding setups and work instructions.
- Collaboration and Coordination: Collaborate with planning and scheduling to ensure on-time delivery of products. Work with engineering and manufacturing teams to develop rework and repair procedures, ensuring high-quality execution. Collaborate with design engineers to identify issues and suggest improvements during design reviews for custom systems. Contribute to design reviews for custom systems, providing feedback on potential improvements.
- Technical and Process Improvement: Interface with direct supervisor to resolve technical, business, and process-related issues. Suggest design improvements to enhance efficiency and reduce costs. Apply manufacturing engineering knowledge to improve design for manufacturability, streamlining production processes and enhancing overall efficiency. Write CAPAs (Corrective and Preventive Actions) to improve methods and processes.
- Inventory and Maintenance Management: Use the ERP system to manage inventory and ensure job accuracy. Perform minor repairs and maintenance of welding and machine shop equipment, working with facilities to ensure equipment is properly maintained and serviced. Inform manager of any maintenance required on equipment used in the welding and machine shop departments and the need for any tools or supplies required to support all departmental activities. Order welding and machine shop consumables and materials.
- Training and Development: Assist the Manufacturing Manager in developing training plans for welders and machinists.
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 8 years of experience as a welder or machinist working on low-volume, high-mix parts.
- 1 years of experience in a team lead or supervisory role
- Functional knowledge of precision measurement devices, power tools, pneumatic tools, and hand tools.
- Good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. manually on a non-repetitive basis.
- Vision acceptable to pass visual acuity and color tests with or without correction may be required.
- Technical/trade school diploma
