Position Summary

Responsible for the administration of ionizing radiation for diagnostic, therapeutic or research purposes and performs radiographic procedures at the request of and for interpretation by a licensed independent practitioner. Independently perform or assist the licensed independent practitioner in the completion of radiographic procedures. Prepare, administer and document activities related to medications in accordance with state and federal regulations or lawful institutional policy. Radiographers are the primary liaison between patients, licensed independent practitioners and other members of the support team.



Position Responsibilities

Standard Work Duties: Radiology Tech (PRN)
  • Receiving, relaying and documenting verbal, written and electronic orders in the patient's medical record. Corroborating a patient's clinical history with procedure and ensuring information is documented and available for use by a licensed independent practitioner.
  • Performing venipuncture as prescribed by a licensed independent practitioner. Starting, maintaining and/or removing intravenous access as prescribed by a licensed independent practitioner.
  • Identifying, preparing and/or administering medications, within the defined scope of practice, as prescribed by a licensed independent practitioner.
  • Performing diagnostic radiographic and noninterpretive fluoroscopic procedures as prescribed by a licensed independent practitioner. Determine technical exposure factors. Assist licensed independent practitioner with fluoroscopic and specialized radiologic procedures.
  • Employs professional judgment to adapt imaging and therapeutic procedures to improve diagnostic quality and therapeutic outcomes. Review lab values prior to administering medication and beginning specialized radiologic procedures. Determines type and dose of contrast agent to be administered, based on the patient's age, weight and medical/physical status and department defined protocol.
  • Employs proper radiation safety practices. Use technical factors according to equipment specifications to meet the ALARA principle. Use pre-exposure collimation and proper field-of-view selection. Uses appropriate pre-exposure radiopaque markers for anatomical and procedural purposes. Selects the best position for the demonstration of anatomy.
  • Reviews all diagnostic or therapeutic data for completeness and accuracy. Uses evidence-based practice to determine whether the actual outcome is within established criteria. Evaluates the process and recognizes opportunities for future changes. Assesses the patient's physical, emotional and mental status prior to discharge.
  • Documents diagnostic, treatment and patient data in the medical record in a timely, accurate and comprehensive manner. Documents unintended outcomes or exceptions from the established criteria. Provides pertinent information to authorized individual(s) involved in the patient's care. Records information used for billing and coding procedures. Archives images or data. Verifies patient consent is documented. Documents procedural timeout. Documents fluoroscopic time. Documents radiation exposure. Documents the use of shielding devices and proper radiation safety practices per institutional policy.
  • Collaborates with others to elevate the quality of care. Participates in ongoing quality assurance programs. Adheres to standards, policies and established guidelines. Applies professional judgment and discretion while performing the diagnostic study or treatment. Anticipates, considers and responds to the needs of a diverse patient population.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


Competencies & Skills

Essential:


  • Basic knowledge and skills obtained through the completion of a JRCERT approved program in Radiologic Technology


Qualifications & Experience

Essential:

  • Associate Degree
Nonessential:
  • Bachelor Degree


Essential:

  • Any academic degree and completion of a JRCERT approved educational program in Radiologic Technology
Nonessential:
  • Radiological Sciences or other related major


Essential:

  • Basic Cardiac Life Support

Other information:
Licenses Essential:
Current General Radiographer license from Florida Department of Health
Current American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in Radiography - RT(R)
