Summer at Lakeside is currently recruiting for a middle school Math teacher to teach "Real-World Math" at our Investigative Learning Camp, an academic and experiential summer camp designed for students entering grades 5-8. In this class, students will explore how mathematicians model situations like climate change, wildlife population management, map-making, and earthquake preparation. Curriculum development and daily activities will be designed by the teacher. The Investigative Learning Camp (ILC) offers students the opportunity to take classes covering STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) -based topics. All courses encourage creative play and hands-on learning; courses are project-based and do not assume students have any previous knowledge of the subject matter. No homework is assigned.
The "Real-World Math" course runs mornings, 9 : 00 a.m.- 12 : 00 p.m. This class runs for one week, July 28 - August 1. There will be a mandatory orientation meeting on Wednesday, July 2. Specific Responsibilities
- Create an inclusive and culturally responsive curriculum that encourages creativity, collaboration, risk-taking, and critical thinking
- Create organized and engaging lesson plans that include additional challenges for each day
- Order and organize supplies necessary
- Supervise and instruct a diverse group of students that have different educational backgrounds and experiences
- Train and supervise the assigned high-school counselor, who serves as a classroom teaching assistant
- Provide individual support and adapt different teaching strategies for students needing additional instruction
Requirements and Qualifications
Compensation and Benefits
The stipend for this position is $1,000 / week or $4,000 for teaching all four weeks of camp. Lunch is included. The course may only run if enough students register. Enrollment will remain open until June 1. If the number of students enrolled is too small to run by June 1, or if the course is canceled for any reason, the stipend will not be paid. Summer at Lakeside also offers free camp for children (Gr.3-8) of all summer employees for the weeks when they are working for the summer program. Employees must register their children via the Summer at Lakeside webpage.
