JOB DESCRIPTION:


Primary Purpose: Provide direct support to a student with deaf/blindness for all or part of the instructional day as determined by the student’s Individual Educational Plan (IEP). The Deaf/Blind Intervener works cooperatively with parents and other direct service providers including classroom teachers, AI teachers, VI teachers, Speech therapists, Occupational and Physical Therapists, Orientation and mobility instructors, and other professionals as well as paraprofessionals.


RESPONSIBILITIES:


Major Responsibilities and Duties
  • Work one-on-one on an ongoing basis with assigned student(s) who is deaf-blind.
  • Creates instructional materials as needed.
  • Collaborates in a team model on issues related to deaf/blindness.
  • Cooperatively perform tasks under the supervision of the teacher.
  • Provide assistance to the teacher in preparing and implementing Positive Behavior Supports and the Texas Behavior Support Initiative.
  • Assist in teaching and implementing school rules and routines at the campus.
  • Provide academic/vocational instruction to individual student as directed by the teacher on student Individual Education Plan (IEP) goals/objectives and state assessment tasks.
  • Escort assigned student to elective and outclasses assigned by the teacher.
  • Collect data on student IEP goals/objectives as directed by the teacher.
  • Performs assigned supervision of student during lunch period, play period, and on field trips.
  • Perform assigned non-instructional classroom duties, such as snack time, toileting, clothing routines and self-help skills as applicable.
  • Appropriately manage student physically, verbally, and non-verbally who may be out of emotional/behavioral control.
  • Teach and practice social skills in alignment with age/grade/program expectations.
  • Demonstrate ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students in school environment and community.
  • Attend meetings and in-service presentations (e.g. trainings, IEP meetings, emergency procedures, etc.) for the purpose of acquiring and/or conveying information relative to job functions.
  • Confer with teachers on a regular basis for the purpose of accountability and assisting in evaluating special education student progress and/or implementing IEP objectives.
  • Complete SHARS billing and/or Time Study requirements on services provided to eligible students.
  • Attendance at work is an essential function.
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor or designee.
Student Management
  • Provide direct support to student with deaf/blindness during all or part of a school day as part of an educational team, and as indicated in the student’s IEP.
  • Follow the student IEP and modifications and instructional techniques recommended by related service and staff.
  • Become proficient in students’ individual communication methods and strategies.
  • Accompany and support the student during community-based instruction.

EXPERIENCE:


QUALIFICATIONS:


Minimum Education/Certification:
  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • 8 college hours related to deaf-blind coursework from an accredited college or university recognized by the US Department of Education or local education agency preferred
  • Completed one-hour practicum in deaf-blind related coursework from an accredited college or university recognized by the US Department of Education or local education agency preferred
Special Knowledge/Skills:
  • Ability to read, write and implement instructions designated by teachers/supervisors in order to meet IEP objectives
  • Knowledge of the communication modality used by the student who is deaf-blind
  • Knowledge of deaf-blindness and its impact on language and social skill development
  • Knowledge of the theory of intervention as it relates to students who are deaf-blind
  • Knowledge of hand-over-hand teaching skill
  • Ability to follow directives and to perform tasks necessary to ensure the safety of students at all times
  • Ability to communicate positively with students, both verbally and non-verbally
  • Ability to change diapers, feed and care for student

OTHER INFORMATION:


Equipment Used: Computer, copy machine and other standard office equipment, audiovisual equipment, lifting equipment, special learning devices and other specialized/adaptive equipment used by students. Working Conditions: Mental/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Communicating (verbal and written), understanding verbal instructions, reasoning skills, reading, instructing, emotional control. Frequent light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds), occasional heavy lifting and carrying (45 pounds and over) and positioning students with physical disabilities, controlling behavior through appropriate restraint techniques, assisting non-ambulatory students, lifting and moving adaptive and other classroom equipment, pushing, pulling, reaching above shoulders, use of fingers, walking, standing, repeated bending, specific visual requirements (activity sufficient for reading/writing), specific hearing requirements (activity sufficient to monitor children's safety), traveling (daily, to many settings on and off campus).
