JOB DESCRIPTION:
PRIMARY PURPOSE:
To provide a comprehensive, diversified program to address the developmental needs of summer school students in educational, social, personal, and career areas necessary for living in a multi-cultural society.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
School Climate
- Serve as a mediator between students and faculty, among staff, and between faculty and parents to assure a more effective education for students and a more positive working climate.
- Coordinate meetings among faculty groups for the purpose of planning and evaluating student progress.
School/Organizational Improvement
- Sponsor and/or supervise extracurricular and co-curricular activities when appropriate.
- Provide appropriate counseling services and activities in crisis situations.
- Serve on campus and District-wide committees to assist in planning and decision making.
Program Management
- Plan, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive program of guidance, including counseling services.
- Organize personnel, physical resources, and activities to address special needs populations.
- Collaborate with school and District staff to select and design appraisal programs and instruments to help students identify abilities, aptitudes, achievements, and interests.
Student Management
- Guide all students as they plan, monitor, and manage their own educational, career, and personal-social development through individual and group counseling and guidance.
- Intervene through individual and small group counseling and timely follow-up in the decision-making principles of students whose immediate and personal concerns or problems put their continued personal-social, career, and/or educational development at risk.
- Assist students to effectively manage transitions from year to year, school to school, and to post-high school experiences.
- Use sources of appraisal information to assist in planning for and with students.
- Interpret relevant information to persons about development and needs of students.

- Seek, plan for, and engage in professional development opportunities.
- Adhere to ethical, legal, and professional standards.
- Hold values conducive to effective guidance and counseling.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor and/or Superintendent.
School/Community Relations
- Collaborate with professional personnel and parents about classroom, social emotional, and behavioral management issues.
- Use an effective referral process for assisting students and faculty to use community services and programs.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Supervise secretarial and clerical personnel as assigned.
- Supervise activities of volunteers as appropriate.
EXPERIENCE:
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Education/Certification:
- Master’s degree
- Valid certification as a school counselor
- Valid Texas driver’s license
- Eligible for coverage under the district’s vehicle insurance program
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Ability to relate to and effectively communicate with people of all ages and cultural backgrounds
