JOB DESCRIPTION:


Primary Purpose: Direct, supervise and manage the instructional program and supervise operations at the campus level. Provide instructional leadership to ensure high standards of instructional service. Direct the implementation of district policies and instructional programs and manage the operation of all campus activities.


RESPONSIBILITIES:


Major Responsibilities and Duties
Instructional Management

  • Monitor instructional and managerial processes to ensure that program activities are related to program outcomes and use these findings for corrective action and improvement.
  • Regularly consult with the campus level committee about the planning, operation, supervision and evaluation of the campus education program. Include students and community representatives when appropriate.

School/Organizational Climate

  • Provide instructional resources and materials to support teaching staff in accomplishing instructional goals.
  • Foster collegiality and team building among staff; encourage their active involvement in the collaborative decision making process.
  • Provide for two-way communication with Superintendent, staff, students, parents and community.
  • Communicate and promote expectation for high level performance from staff and students; recognize excellence and achievement.
  • Facilitate effective and timely resolution of conflict.

School/Organizational Improvement

  • Build a common vision for school improvement with staff. Direct planning activities and implement programs with staff to ensure attainment of school’s mission.
  • Identify, analyze and apply research findings (e.g., effective school correlates) to facilitate school improvement.
  • Develop and set annual campus performance objectives for each of the academic excellence indicators using the campus planning process and site-based decision making committee.
  • Develop, maintain and use appropriate information systems and records necessary to show campus progress on performance objectives addressing each academic excellence indicator.

Personnel Management

  • Interview, select, orient new staff and approve all personnel assigned to the campus.
  • Define expectations for staff performance with regard to instructional strategies, classroom management and communication with the public.
  • Observe employee performance, record observations and conduct evaluation conferences with all staff.
  • Assign and promote campus personnel.
  • Make recommendations to the Superintendent on the termination, suspension, or non-renewal of employees assigned to the campus.
  • Work with campus level planning and decision making committees to plan professional development activities.
  • Confer with subordinates regarding their professional growth. Work with them to develop and accomplish improvement goals.

Administration and Fiscal/Facilities Management

  • Comply with district policies, as well as state and federal laws and regulations affecting the schools.
  • Develop campus budgets based on documented program needs, estimated enrollment, personnel and other fiscal needs. Keep programs within budget limits. Maintain fiscal control. Accurately report fiscal information.
  • Compile, maintain and file all physical and computerized reports, records and other documents required including accurate and timely reports of maximum attendance for the purpose of textbook requisitions.
  • Manage the use of school facilities. Supervise maintenance of facilities to ensure a clean, orderly and safe campus.

Student Management

  • Work with faculty and students to develop a student management system that results in positive student behavior and enhances the school climate.
  • Ensure that school rules are uniformly observed and that student discipline is appropriate and equitable in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and the Student Handbook.
  • Conduct conferences with parents, students and teachers concerning school and student issues.

Professional Growth and Development

  • Develop professional skills appropriate to the job assignment.
  • Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical and responsible. Serve as a role model for all campus staff.

School/Community Relations

  • Articulate the school’s mission to the community and solicit its support in realizing the mission.
  • Demonstrate awareness of school/community needs and initiate activities to meet those identified needs.
  • Use appropriate and effective techniques to encourage community and parent involvement.
  • Attendance at work is an essential function.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor or designee.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and evaluate the performance of campus personnel including assistant principals, teachers, counselors, librarians, instructional aides, clerical support staff and custodians


EXPERIENCE:


Minimum Experience:
  • Assistant principal experience required, minimum of three years preferred
  • Three years of experience as a classroom teacher
  • Two years of experience in instructional leadership roles

QUALIFICATIONS:


Minimum Education/Certification:
  • Master's degree
  • Texas Mid Management/Principal certification or other appropriate Texas certificate
  • Credentials required for teacher appraisal or eligible to obtain
  • Valid Texas driver's License
  • Eligible for coverage under the District's vehicle insurance program
Special Knowledge/Skills:
  • Working knowledge of curriculum and instruction
  • Ability to evaluate instructional program and teaching effectiveness
  • Strong organizational, communication, public relations and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to manage budget and personnel

OTHER INFORMATION:


Working Conditions: Mental/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Ability to concentrate (detailed work), communicate effectively (verbal and written); interpret policy, procedures, and data; reason, understand verbal instructions, analyze, differentiate, memorize, read, coordinate district functions, compile, compute, instruct, and maintain emotional control under stress. Occasional district and statewide travel, frequent prolonged and irregular hours.
