JOB DESCRIPTION:


Primary Purpose: To facilitate the teaching and learning process within a positive learning environment (in-person, distance and/or virtual) so that students acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for them to become responsible, contributing adults in a democratic society. Plan, coordinate and supervise components of the athletic training program for student athletes and work under the direction of a team physician to carry out activities in the following areas: prevention, evaluation, emergency treatment, physical reconditioning and rehabilitation of injuries.


RESPONSIBILITIES:


Major Responsibilities and Duties
Instructional Management
  • Plan a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests and abilities of students.
  • Enhance the academic growth of students through the use of effective teaching practices as utilized in the instructional model.
  • Guide the learning process towards the achievement of curriculum goals by establishing clear objectives for all lessons, units and projects.
  • Employ the instructional methods and resources that are most appropriate for meeting state objectives.
  • Meet and instruct assigned classes in the location and at the time designated.
  • Assess the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provide progress reports as required.
  • Diagnose the learning disabilities of students on a regular basis, seeking the assistance of district specialists as required.
School/Organizational Improvement
  • Attend staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required.
  • Counsel with colleagues, students and/or parents regarding student achievement and the instructional program.
  • Accept a share of responsibility for co-curricular activities as assigned.
School/Organizational Climate
  • Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students.
  • Strive to implement the District’s philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives.
  • Cooperate with other members of the staff in planning instructional goals, objectives and methods.
Personnel Management
  • Maintain order in the classroom in a fair and just manner through reasonable rules and regulations.
  • Plan and supervise purposeful assignments for teacher aide(s) and/or volunteer(s), and cooperatively with department heads and/or grade level leaders, evaluate their job performance.
Administrative and Fiscal/Facilities Management
  • Take necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
  • Maintain accurate, complete and correct records as required by law, district policy and administrative regulations.
  • Assist in upholding and enforcing school rules, administrative regulations and Board Policy.
  • Assist in the selection of books, equipment and other instructional materials.
Professional Growth and Development
  • Accept responsibility for professional growth through involvement in an ongoing program of reading, workshops, seminars, conferences and/or advanced course work at institution of higher learning.
School/Community Relations
  • Be available in-person, by phone, email, or video conferencing to confer with district personnel, students and/or parents.
  • Communicate with students and parents on a regular basis via phone, video conference, email, or district-approved website.
  • Make provisions for being available to students and parents for educationally related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
Other
  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Attendance at work is an essential function.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor and/or Superintendent.
Athletic Training
  • Plan and implement a comprehensive athletic injury and illness prevention program for student athletes.
  • Attend practice sessions and athletic contests as assigned by athletic director.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication with students, parents, medical and paramedical personnel, coaches and other staff.
  • Provide physical conditioning training to student athletes.
  • Fit injured athletes with specialized equipment and oversee its use.
  • Prepare athletes for games and practices by conducting evaluations and using tape, wraps, splints, braces and other protective devices as needed.
  • Respond to emergencies and make quick, independent judgments about how to deal with injuries.
  • Identify acute injuries and provide first-aid triage, including assessing injuries and deciding whether an athlete should seek further medical attention and should discontinue participation in the athletic event.
  • Establish specific procedures to be carried out by a coach or student trainer in the event of a medical emergency.
  • Detect and resolve environmental risks to athletes.
Rehabilitation/Reconditioning
  • Plan and put in place a comprehensive rehabilitation and reconditioning program for injuries and illnesses sustained by student athletes.
  • Determine therapeutic goals and objectives for individual athletes.
  • Apply therapeutic modalities and instruct athletes on proper use of exercise equipment.
  • Evaluate and record rehabilitation progress of athletes. Develop criteria for progression and return to practice and competition.
  • Follow professional, ethical, and legal parameters regarding use of drugs and therapeutic agents for treatment and rehabilitation of injured athletes.
Administration
  • Coordinate scheduling of athletic physical examinations and screening.
  • Select, train, and supervise student assistants.
  • Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents including medical, accident, and treatment records as required.
  • Maintain an inventory of training supplies and equipment. Requisition additional supplies as needed.
  • Attendance at work is an essential function.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Supervise teacher aides and volunteers as assigned
  • Supervise the work of student assistants
  • Supervise students

Exercise equipment and devices including stationary bike, pulleys, weights, whirlpool, paraffin bath, ultrasound equipment, and cold packs


EXPERIENCE:


QUALIFICATIONS:


Minimum Education/Certification:
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Valid Texas teacher certificate or teaching certificate from out of state appropriate for position
  • Must meet requirements under the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) for highly qualified teachers
  • Valid license from Texas Advisory Board of Athletic Trainers
Special Knowledge/Skills:
  • Working knowledge of curriculum and instruction
  • Effective communication skills/collaborative working style
  • Ability to instruct students using a variety of technology applications and platforms
  • Ability to exercise effective teaching practices appropriate for assigned modality
  • Ability to support students with computer setup, navigation, and technology issues if assigned to distance or virtual instruction
  • Expertise in one or more academic areas and/or developmental age group or population
  • Ability to provide injury prevention and rehabilitation services
  • Ability to provide emergency care
  • Knowledge of therapeutic modalities and ability to apply appropriate treatment to treat student athletic injuries
  • Ability to instruct and supervise student athletes and assistants
