About This Role:
The Resident Assistant (RA) is responsible for building community within a living area housing approximately 36-96 students in one of the University residence halls. Reporting to a Complex Director (CD) or Assistant Director (AD), the RA is responsible for facilitating a positive, inclusive living and learning environment within the residence halls.
The RA is the most direct link between the Office of Housing and Residence Life and the residents, and as such, maintains open and effective face-to-face lines of communication between themselves and their residents.

The RA is the most direct link between the Office of Housing and Residence Life and the residents, and as such, maintains open and effective face-to-face lines of communication between themselves and their residents.
- Desk shift time consists of pre-scheduled blocks of time that the RA is required to sit at the desk, answer phones, respond to residents’ requests, and to carry out other desk operations in accordance with the Front Desk Operations Manual.
- Active time involves, but is not limited to, the following:
o Program planning, preparation, and implementation (1-3 hours)
o One-on-one meetings with supervisor (1 hour)
o Staff meetings (1 hour)
o Duty/Rounds (2-3 hours)
o Working directly with students (1 hour)
o Door-to-door communications, advertising programs (1 hour)
o Health & Wellness Inspections (2-3 hours during H&W inspection week)
Work Hours:
- The RA position is considered to be approximately a 20-hour-per-week commitment, comprised of desk shifts (10 hours) and “active” time.
NOTE: The 20-hour per week commitment is an approximation. Depending on the time of year and what is going on at the time, the RA should be flexible to dedicate over 20-hours when necessary.
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA
- At least 30 credit hours completed & sophomore standing
- Have no other on-campus employment commitments
- Be an undergraduate enrolled full-time during employment
- Be in good academic and student conduct standing with the university
- Serve on an on-call rotation that requires you to be in the residence hall one weekday night per week and one weekend per month
- Attend mandatory trainings and orientations at the beginning of each semester
- Attend mandatory monthly all-staff in-services
- Build healthy, positive relationships with other students
- Work collaboratively with others
- Be able to work at least 10 weekday hours at the desk as schedule
Physical Requirements
- Moderate physical activity. Can require handling objects of average weight up to 30 lbs. or standing and/walking for more than 4 hours per day. Willingness to work flexible schedule, which may include evening and weekend hours as required and emergency management and/or crisis management. Willing to assist with the evacuation process of residence students to an off-site location for tropical storm or hurricane. Must be able to remain in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods. Must be able to have repetitive wrist/hand/finger movement to work on computer and/or related office equipment. Moving self in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments including tight and confined spaces. Moving about accomplishing tasks or moving from one worksite to another. Communication with others to exchange information.
