What are the responsibilities and job description for the Linux Desktop Support position at Lancaster Farms, Inc.?
Who we are: Lancaster Farms, Inc. is a wholesale container nursery in Northern Suffolk. Since 1969 we have been Virginia's premier grower of landscape plants: flowers, shrubs and trees.
What you need to know (cause we don't want to teach you):
10 LINUX or UNIX;
20 what to do when you see "server@localhost:~$";
30 how to crimp Cat 6;
40 how to crawl under a building;
50 how to effectively use SSH
90 GOTO 10
Seriously, what's the job? Maintaining, fixing and troubleshooting our IT infrastructure. We have three farms (about 300 acres total), connected to each other via internet. Buildings at the individual farms are connected by fiber, ethernet and/or wireless directional antennas. Wide area WiFi in the fields. We have a hybrid system to support: the legacy system is MS BASIC running on SCO Openserver, with VT100 terminals (or emulator) as the interface (not kidding). More modern system is HTML/PERL/MYSQL. Even more modern is Angular web app (under development). VOIP phone system. Self-hosted email and webservers, cloud and virtualization environment. Tons of printers (with plenty of paper jams, low toner warnings and dirty print heads...we even have a few dot matrix still in use). Also, we have a timelapse photo studio that needs several hours of maintenance each week.
