Position Summary:
The OB/Labor & Delivery Nurse is responsible for providing comprehensive nursing care to patients in the antepartum, postpartum, laboring stages, newborn baby care, and care of post-surgical C-section patients. This role requires professional knowledge, independent decision-making, and adherence to physician’s orders and hospital policies.
Position Complexities:
The nurse will utilize after-hours call services, work on holidays and weekends, and respond to emergencies including trauma and fetal distress C-sections. The ability to remain calm and make sound judgments in emergencies is crucial. Clinical decisions are made independently during shifts, with consultation from a manager/supervisor when needed.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
- Patient Care (30%): Implement safe and efficient patient care practices, administer medications, coordinate patient care activities, and provide individualized nursing care.
- C-section and Obstetrics Unit Care (20%): Monitor post-surgical patients, provide labor and delivery care, support breastfeeding, and stabilize high-risk patients.
- Nursing Assessment (10%): Conduct thorough patient assessments and document findings, identify problems, and utilize resources for unfamiliar conditions.
- Education and Support (15%): Provide educational support to patients, families, and staff, develop educational programs, and participate in patient care conferences.
- Communication and Leadership (10%): Maintain positive communication with healthcare team members, assist in staff orientation, and provide feedback and guidance.
- Nursing Action Plan (10%): Develop and implement nursing care plans, transcribe physician orders, and document patient progress.
- Additional Duties (5%): Participate in staff meetings, maintain certifications, and comply with hospital policies.
Position Qualifications:
- Education: Required to obtain a valid, current, full, and unrestricted RN license in the State of Alaska.
- Experience: Labor & Delivery RN experience required.
- Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge: Nursing care principles, pharmaceuticals, and emergency response.
- Skills: Operate medical equipment, proficient in nursing procedures, and effective communication.
- Abilities: Provide guidance and leadership, implement therapeutic interventions, and maintain interpersonal relationships.
Additional Information:
- Primary shift: 7 pm to 7 am, varying nights of the week.
- Flexibility to assist with patient care during low census on unit.
- Must be willing to float to Medical Surgical Floor & ED, if needed.

License and Certification Requirements:
- Must have an active Alaska RN License at the time of submission.
- Must have/obtain Flu vaccination.
- Certifications required: BLS until ACLS is obtained, ACLS, PALS, and NRP upon hire.
