Position Overview:
The Grading and Paving Superintendent is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing all aspects of grading and asphalt paving operations on construction projects. This individual ensures safety, quality, and production standards are met while coordinating crews, subcontractors, equipment, and materials to deliver efficient and on-time results. The Superintendent serves as the boots-on-the-ground leader who brings plans to life through effective communication, field experience, and decisive action.
Key Responsibilities:
- Plan, coordinate, and supervise all on-site grading and paving activities from start to finish.
- Ensure compliance with all safety regulations, company policies, and project specifications.
- Work closely with project managers, foremen, and subcontractors to ensure project goals and schedules are met.
- Manage crew performance and morale, provide training/coaching, and enforce company standards.
- Read and interpret civil plans, grade stakes, and paving layouts.
- Order materials, coordinate trucking, and ensure proper equipment is on-site and operating efficiently.
- Monitor progress, resolve problems proactively, and make real-time adjustments to keep work flowing.
- Track daily quantities, production rates, and crew hours; report to project management.
- Conduct pre-pave meetings and ensure surface prep, base compaction, and mix designs are within spec.
- Uphold a culture of pride, accountability, and craftsmanship in all phases of work.
Qualifications:
- 5 years of heavy civil construction experience with a strong background in grading and asphalt paving.
- Proven supervisory or foreman experience, preferably in excavation or site development.
- Strong understanding of soil types, compaction standards, grades/slopes, and paving techniques.
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans, blueprints, and GPS layouts.
- Familiarity with paving equipment (pavers, rollers, graders, compactors) and their best use.
- Solid communication skills with ability to lead teams and coordinate with various stakeholders.
- Must be organized, reliable, safety-focused, and solution-oriented.
- CDL preferred but not required.
- Proficiency with basic field reporting and mobile apps (e.g., timecards, daily logs).
