HIM Assistant/ Medical Records Assistant Summary: The HIM Assistant, reporting to the Chief Executive Officer and the Corporate Director of HIM, is accountable for the performance of the hospital's health information management function. Responsible for maintenance of health information in compliance with federal and state laws, and regulatory and accrediting agencies' standards. The HIM Assistant will also perform other functions in the HIM Department including but not limited to the following: answering the phone, copying records, assembling discharged records, flagging chart deficiencies, maintaining deficient record count, notifying practitioners of deficiencies, maintaining filing system, responding to requests for information, logging medical record disclosures, data entry as needed.
Full Time, M-F 8:00am - 5:00pm, no weekends or Holidays
Location: on-site
Health Information Management Assistant Responsibilities:
- Serves as hospital Privacy Officer ensuring that record-keeping and information use and disclosure comply with HIPAA regulations
- Responsible for overseeing confidentiality, managing release of information, information storage and retrieval, record retention, authorship and authentication of health record documentation, standardization of medical vocabularies, and use of classification systems
- Prepares medical record folders for transferring hospitals, discharge records and ensures completeness and accuracy
- Oversees and implements all policies and procedures related to healthcare information management
- Supports and facilitates clinical, administrative and external data use functions
- Ensures accuracy and efficiency in the medical record department
- Reviews processes and identifies areas for best practices while taking into consideration user needs
Health Information Management Assistant Requirements:
- High School diploma
- Associate's degree in health information management strongly preferred
- 1 – 3 years prior experience utilizing healthcare information technology, encoder applications, transcription platforms, electronic medical records
- RHIA or RHIT credentials (preferred)
- Missouri Notary is a plus but not required
- Some basic knowledge of ICD-10 coding rules and regulations
- Prior experience utilizing HIM technology, and electronic medical records
- Strong communication skills
- Critical thinking, and organization abilities
- Demonstrated ability to develop effective collaborative relationships
- Strategic thinker, self-motivator, possesses experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals
- Ability to work closely and effectively with a close knit management team
- Ability to work independently
