Schedules:
- Full-time - Nights - 12 hour shift
- Part-time - Days or Nights - Weekends
OVERVIEW: The Charge Nurse (CN) works closely with the Director of Nursing (DON) to coordinate daily administrative duties, conduct audits, assist with scheduling, perform modified nursing intakes, nursing assignments and patient care by using resources effectively and efficiently to maintain a high level of care in accordance with regulatory standards. Continuous patient monitoring, ensuring patient and staff safety and compliance with the organization’s directives.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- In the absence of a nurse practitioner, conduct initial assessment to determine patient’s appropriateness to admit.
- Oversee patient admissions, transfers, and discharges.
- Collaborate with nurses to maintain a high level of care to patients by monitoring, assessing and record keeping.
- Provide support to nurses on shift and assist nurses to effectively communicate with patients regarding their treatment, care, and liaises with the provider.
- Identify areas of non-compliance and provide in-services as needed.
- Perform audits, ensure daily nurses’ day and night checklists are completed in a timely manner and kept in binder.
- Lead the change of shift meeting and ensure all nurses are oriented appropriately to patients on the milieu prior to starting shift.
- Assist in completion of nursing at risk checklist and provide coaching as discussed with the DON.
- Be able to identify high risk patients and discuss treatment plan with the provider.
- Ensure correct and complete documentation if patient needs higher level of care (HLOC) and nurse to nurse handoff is given. Follow directive on HLOC patients.
- Be responsible for coordinating return to the facility for patients who are sent to HLOC by contacting nurse at hospital once per shift.
- Be responsible for leading all codes.
- Administer medication safely and efficiently.
- Do random narcotic counts to ensure accurate use and storage of narcotics.
- Destroy narcotics and non-narcotic medications daily as per organization’s directive.
- Complete medication census within the shift to ensure that all medication is given in a timely manner.
- Perform and encourage team dynamics to maintain continuous quality improvement and patient safety.
- Follow up on medication that is unavailable and follow up to ensure that pharmacy delivers medication in a timely manner.
- Assist in conducting weekly urine drug screens.
- Receive, analyze, and upload laboratory results to Sunwave.
- Communicate laboratory results to physician or Nurse Practitioner.
- Complete administrative duties as assigned by DON.
- Perform all other tasks assigned by supervisor.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist with carrying out supervisory responsibilities as delegated by the DON in accordance with the organization’s directives.
- Possess excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
