A County Facility in Milton needs a full-time veterinary technician to work on the weekends. This is an excellent opportunity for someone to join a dynamic, supportive working environment.
Job Responsibilities :
- You will ensure the safety and health of animals and co-workers by utilizing safe restraining techniques, following standard protocols, and maintaining a clean, sterile, organized treatment area and surgery suite.
- Assist shelter Veterinarians in surgical procedures by monitoring anesthesia, heart rate, and blood pressure, running the autoclave, cleaning instruments, and "gloving in" when necessary.
- Preparing animals for surgery, performing pre and post-surgical observations of animals, and reporting condition changes.
- Acting as an extra set of eyes, ears, and hands for the veterinarian to ensure the best quality animal care and maximize the veterinarian's productivity. Performs procedures that do not require veterinarian assistance (examples : bandaging animals, drawing up drug dosages, cleaning wounds).
- Performing emergency medical care to sick and injured animals . Initiates advanced and basic life support by following protocols and veterinarian.
- Preparing veterinarian care reports, which involves documenting medical conditions and activities applied to patients using a computer
- Communicating medical conditions with Vets, adopters, animal care groups, and kennel staff.
- Sedates and prepares animals for surgery, including weighing and shaving animals, calculating drug dosages, and preparing injections.
- Draws up, logs, and administers controlled substances under the supervision of a veterinarian . Performs venipuncture to draw animal blood samples and runs and interprets diagnostic tests using blood samples.
- Collects fecal samples from animals and processes for results. Performs skin scraping for animals with skin problems. Communicates test results to the veterinarian.
- Enters medical information, medication, and surgical procedures performed into the computer system
- Monitors inventory levels and maintains the facility's medical supply and drug inventory.
- Maintains a sanitary environment in surgery and clinic areas by cleaning surgery clinic areas, including cages, counters, tables, and floors.
- Assesses animals within the shelter for adoption . Cleans and feeds animals in other kennel areas within the facility as needed.
- Assist kennel staff and ACOs with intakes and medical needs assessments.
- Make daily rounds to assess medical needs within the shelter.
- Ensures proper medications and medical recording forms / signage are attached to animals at the animal housing location.
- Ensures all intakes receive heartworm tests, preventative meds, and microchips at intake when behavior permits.
- Relay any behavior that prevents intake to leadership.
