Job Description
Reports to: Accounting Manager
FLSA Status: Exempt
Position Summary:
The Staff Accountant will perform general accounting duties including preparing journal entries, maintaining balance sheet schedules and ledgers, and account reconciliations. They will support the preparation of the monthly financial statements, including variance analysis. This role will be very involved in the day-to-day sales, use and VAT tax compliance.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
The position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Responsibilities & Duties:
· Prepare journal entries and reconcile balance sheet accounts
· Assist with monthly closings and preparation of monthly financial statements and reports
· Investigate variances in balances, versus both prior year and budget
· Assist with implementing and maintaining internal financial controls and procedures
· Support the preparation and coordination of the yearly review process
· Compile information and prepare monthly sales and use tax returns timely and accurately
· Ensure prompt payment of sales and use taxes
· Maintain reconciliations between the ledger sales tax liability and the external sales tax platform, Avalara software
· Work with customers to collect and store sales tax exemption forms on file
· Assist with any sales and use tax audits
· Assist with customer tax inquiries, tax credits, and processing new exemption certificates
· Research state and local tax requirements to ensure compliance with taxability
· Promote and maintain a clean and safe work environment by complying with procedures, policies, training, and regulations
· Ensure established policies and procedures are followed
· Participate in continuous improvement project team activities
· Assist with talent and workforce planning
· Other duties as assigned
Education/Experience/Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, Tax
· 1-3 years relevant accounting and/or sales tax experience
· CPA, preferred
Skills & Abilities:
· Knowledge of accounting and tax principles, including GAAP, sales tax laws and regulations
· Experience working with various accounting and finance software, including Avalara, ERP systems, AP/AR and expense platforms, desired
· Experience in a high-volume distribution-based company, desired
· Knowledge or ability to learn tools necessary for eCommerce and integration
· Ability to communicate effectively (clear and concise) through writing, speaking, active listening, and presentation
· High proficiency in Excel
· Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software
· Excellent organization skills with superior attention to detail
· Ability to adapt to changes in the work environment
· Ability to work with minimum supervision/guidance and must be self-directed
· Excellent problem-solving skills and sound judgment
· Ability to develop and foster business relationships
· Willing to participate in Company designated training
· Must have knowledge of and comply with the policies and procedures contained in the company handbook
