SCHOOL COUNSELOR
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master of Education in Guidance and Counseling
- Valid Alabama teacher’s certificate, with endorsement in counseling and guidance, strongly preferred.
REPORTS TO: Principal and/or Central Office
JOB GOAL:
To provide a comprehensive counseling and guidance program for students; to consult and collaborate with teachers, parents and staff to enhance effectiveness in helping students; and to provide support to other school educational programs.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Develop and implement an effective school guidance and counseling program, including individual, small group and classroom activities as appropriate.
- Define and interpret the guidance and counseling program to students, teachers, parents, administrators, and community members.
- Coordinate the registration of new students and provide them with an orientation to school procedures and the school's various opportunities for learning.
- Assist in the placement of individual students with special needs in appropriate educational situations.
- Coordinate scheduling of students into the most appropriate classes.
- Coordinate the procedure for the security and maintenance of students' educational records.
- Coordinate the school's testing program.
- Prepare informative reports and materials for principals, teachers, students, and parents concerning the results of the school's testing program.
- Assist teachers in identifying and interpreting problems that interfere with a student's ability to learn.
- Provide individual and group counseling opportunities that may lead each student to increased personal growth, self-understanding, and maturity.
- Assist students with career exploration and preparation.
- Establish effective working relationships with employers, agencies, and other institutions that may be of use to teachers, parents, and students.
- Coordinate presentations from community agency organizations.
- Assume responsibility for coordinating appropriate follow-up activities.
- Provide information, resources and referrals as appropriate for students, parents/guardians and faculty/staff.
- Assume responsibility for individual professional development and for attending appropriate professional meetings.
- Assist with record keeping and transcripts.
- Comply with local, state, and federal policies, regulations and laws within area of responsibility as well as the American School Counselor Association Code of Ethics.
- Assume other appropriate duties assigned by the principal.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
10 months unless otherwise determined by the board. Salary and work year to be established by the board.
EVALUATION:
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of professional personnel and as directed by the Alabama State Department of Education personnel evaluation requirements.
