Job Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Assistant Dean of Students for Student Engagement, the Coordinator of Student Engagement and Leadership provides advising, guidance, and acts as a resource for the students and student organizations of Langston University.

This position supports the holistic development of students by coordinating and scheduling events, advising student organizations and clubs, overseeing the Student Activities Board (SAB), and managing marketing initiatives. The Coordinator serves as a liaison between students, staff, faculty, vendors, and community members to ensure the success of student programming.

This role is responsible for conceptualizing and executing programs that enhance the student experience, promote student learning, and aid in retention efforts. The Coordinator must be knowledgeable about university policies and skilled in the reporting and dissemination of student-related information. Additional responsibilities include serving on university committees and supporting initiatives aligned with the mission of Langston University.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a resource to all registered student organizations (RSOs) and their advisors by providing training, workshops, and resource materials.

  • Assist the Assistant Dean of Students with assessing student organization events and managing liability concerns.

  • Provide ongoing training and development opportunities to RSOs, enhancing awareness of Office of Student Life (OSL) and university policies while promoting leadership development.

  • Serve as the primary advisor for the Student Activities Board (SAB), overseeing the planning and execution of major student-led programs including (but not limited to) Welcome Back Week, Homecoming, and Spring Week.

  • Advise the Elite Connection (Royal Court) and oversee the production and execution of the Langston University Royalty Scholarship Pageant Programs.

  • Supervise and provide professional development for OSL student staff, including auditorium and administrative teams.

  • Manage the student engagement platform and coordinate the event registration process, including budget and advertising consultation, risk management, and event logistics.

  • Serve as the L.W. Young Auditorium building manager, overseeing its use by RSOs, campus departments, and community members.

  • Support annual programming during key calendar months such as New Student Orientation, MLK Celebration, Black History Month, Women’s History Month, and others.

  • Collaborate with the Assistant Dean to coordinate the Student Leadership Institute and Student Leadership Awards.

  • Assist with health and wellness initiatives in collaboration with recreation and wellness programming.

  • Support OSL marketing and social media efforts.

  • Submit required reports to the supervisor on a bi-weekly or monthly basis.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean of Students.

  • Must be available to work evenings and weekends as needed.

Position Qualifications:


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

  • 3–5 years of progressive experience in higher education administration.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of student development theory, student advising, and program coordination.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Understanding of student development theory and the mission/philosophy of HBCUs.

  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, oral, and written communication skills.

  • Ability to effectively engage with diverse student populations, faculty, and staff.

  • Skilled in collaboration, team-building, and cross-campus communication.

  • Familiarity with student research, especially concerning HBCUs, and current trends in student services.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or higher in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Student Personnel, or a closely related field.

  • Previous experience in student activities, student union, residential life, or programming in a higher education setting.

  • Experience working with underrepresented student populations.

  • Strong fiscal management, communication, advising, and leadership skills.

  • Commitment to student service, retention efforts, and inclusive programming.
