Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and patient Homebound Life skills / Special Education Teacher to provide individualized instruction to a high-school student functioning at a first-grade level in reading and math. This role focuses on academic skill-building, life skills training, and fostering independence. As an independent contractor, you will be responsible for designing and implementing lesson plans to tailor the instruction to the student’s unique needs and learning styles. Instruction will take place in the student’s home in South Philadelphia.
Assignment Details
- Independent contractor
- Starts immediately
- 15 hours per week (may increase)
- The position may become long-term for a maximum of 2 years
- Instruction will be conducted on a mutually agreed-upon schedule with the family, likely during the school day M-F

Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement customized lesson plans in collaboration with the parent, incorporating academic instruction and life skills training.
- Provide instruction in reading, math, and essential life skills in subjects such as money management, time management, organizational skills, and community navigation.
- Utilize evidence-based teaching strategies and adaptive materials to enhance student engagement and learning.
- Support the development of communication, social, and self-advocacy skills to promote independence.
- Align instruction with the student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) and post-secondary transition goals.
- Maintain accurate records of student progress, attendance, and instructional activities, and communicate updates to the parent and other relevant stakeholders.
- Implement behavioral support strategies, as needed, to create a positive and productive learning environment.
- Collaborate with parents to adjust strategies as needed for student success.
Skills/Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Special Education or a related field.
- Strong knowledge of special education principles and practices.
- Valid teaching certification in Special Education (Pennsylvania).
- Experience working with students with significant learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities, or developmental delays.
- Ability to create and adapt individualized lesson plans to integrate academic and life skills instruction.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, for effective collaboration with the family.
- Self-motivated and organized, with the ability to manage instruction independently.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with homebound instruction or alternative learning environments.
- 3 years working as a special education teacher at the high school level
Independent Contractor Requirements:
- Must have the ability to create and/or provide instructional materials.
- Responsible for managing own schedule and maintaining communication with the parent.
- Reliable transportation.
- Must pass background checks below.

- Department of Human Services Child Abuse History Clearance
- Pennsylvania State Police Request for Criminal Records Check
- Federal Criminal History Record Information (CHRI)
