Maintenance Technician Summer Internship

The Fleet Maintenance Intern under supervision of Transit Vehicle Technicians and the Maintenance Supervisor performs a variety of skilled mechanical duties required in the maintenance and repair of automobiles, light truck, transit vehicles, and equipment. The Fleet Maintenance Intern will assist in performing gasoline, diesel, and alternative fuel (compressed natural gas and hybrid) engine tune-ups and overhauls; electrical and mechanical trouble shooting and repair; preventative and general maintenance on transit vehicles and support equipment; performs other related activities as assigned.

Duration: Summer 2025 Compensation: $17.00 per hour

Position Qualifications

• Applicants must be currently enrolled in a two or four-year university majoring or vocational/technical schooling in Diesel Technology, Automotive Heavy Equipment, or related field
• Experience: Preferred experience working in heavy duty truck or transit
• Computer skills: Basic computer skills with the ability to learn new programs as required.
  
  

Essential Functions

• Assist technicians with inspections, diagnostics, repairs, and replacements of brake systems, fuel and emission systems, drivelines, steering and suspension systems, passenger heating/cooling systems, etc. to ensure they are in proper operating condition.
• Use hand tools such as screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, pressure gauges, precision instruments, HVAC recovery equipment, as well as power tools such as pneumatic wrenches, hydraulic presses in addition to computer programs such as Cummins Insite and Allison DOC.
• Maintains and creates records and work history within electronic repair orders
• Assist technicians in performing routine preventative maintenance inspections and procedures such as changing oil and filters, lubricating steering, suspension and brake components, battery maintenance, compressed natural gas tank inspections, etc.
• Use of in-ground and above-ground hoists as well as portable hoists and hydraulic jacks to raise equipment for inspection and repair.
• Emission related diagnosis and repairs
• Assist technicians in replacing, repairing, and performing routine maintenance on internal combustion engines to include gasoline, diesel, and alternative fuel in addition to transmission and differential units.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Posture: Prolonged standing, short walking, various trunk positions have to be maintained for prolonged periods when performing repairs; sitting only during bus inspections and break periods. Requires normal trunk mobility, bending of knees, normal cervical mobility, full shoulder mobility, normal elbow/wrist/hand mobility.

Force Required: Lumbar lifting, (floor to waist) up to 85 pounds; cervical lifting (waist to overhead) up to 77 pounds; pushing/pulling isometrically up to 62 pounds; dynamically 32 pounds; carrying up to 62 pounds.

Repetitions: Aforementioned tasks are occurring throughout the workday in repair of buses.

Employee is required to perform job duties in accordance with existing health and safety procedures and policies.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work will be performed in a typical bus/auto garage type environment which will be subject to both hot and cold climates.
