Job Summary

The Adjunct Instructor, Zoology/Biology is a part-time, non-benefited position responsible for developing and delivering engaging course content. This position facilitates learning through lectures, discussions, assignments and assessments aligned with the college’s curriculum and academic standards. The Adjunct Instructor collaborates with department staff to ensure course materials and delivery meet the needs of the student population. The Adjunct instructor is also responsible for coordinating and overseeing laboratory experiences and supervising students in laboratory settings.

Compensation: $850 per credit hour.

Priority Screening Date: Position is open until filled.

Starting Date: As soon as practical after the hiring process. This position is filled on an as needed basis.


Principal Responsibilities and Results, KSA's

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: – this position exempt and is not eligible for compensatory or overtime pay provisions of the FLSA. This listing of essential duties is not all-inclusive, but representative, other duties may be assigned).

  • Teaching and Learning: Employs student-centered instruction coupled with the development and use of appropriate and current educational materials. Consistently and promptly responds to student inquiries and shares timely, appropriate, and instructive feedback and evaluation of student work.
  • Competency-Based Design: Applies competency-based design to the development of curriculum, engaging with colleagues at the course, program, and institutional level with the aim of continuous improvement.
  • Professionalism: Collaborates and actively reflects on responsibilities to positively contributes to one’s discipline, Pathway, the College, and the greater community.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups and the measurement of training effects.
  • Knowledge of administrative and office procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, designing forms, and workplace terminology.
  • Knowledge of media production, communication, and dissemination techniques and methods. This includes alternative way to inform and entertain via written, oral, and visual media.
  • Human Anatomy & Physiology: Expertise in gross and microscopic anatomy, organ systems, and homeostasis, along with an understanding of medical terminology.
  • Biological & Zoological Expertise: Strong foundation in cellular biology, genetics, evolution, ecology, animal taxonomy, and physiology.
  • Lab Expertise: Skilled in practicing and leading others in laboratory/field experiences such as: dissections, histology, microscopy, molecular techniques, ecological surveys, and biodiversity assessments for anatomical and/or biological studies.
  • Clinical or Field Experience: experience in medical, clinical, biological, zoological, or ecological work as a career
  • Technology & Safety: Proficiency in virtual anatomy tools, data analysis, and lab/field safety protocols for handling specimens and biological materials.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS:
  • There may be occurrences of interacting with employees and/or students, past employees and/or students, members of the general public, and others who express opinions, may exhibit strong emotions, which will require the employee to interact professionally, diplomatically, and appropriately in such situations
  • While performing the essential duties of this position, an employee would frequently be required to move around the assigned work areas as well as within hallways, meeting rooms, and other parts of the campus facilities
  • There may be multiple/daily instances of prolonged sitting, standing, and personal computer use, which would include keyboard and/or mouse usage as well as viewing a computer monitor
  • An employee must be able lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus
  • The overall work environment requires the mental ability to shift focal point quickly due to interruptions; an employee must be able to mentally track multiple projects and tasking as well
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate; however, there may be instances of somewhat loud environments.

Education and Experience Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in a Biological Science in one of the following subject areas: Biology, Cell Biology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Biochemistry, Zoology, Animal Science, Physiology, Anatomy, Kinesiology

-OR-

  • Master’s in science education and 18 graduate credits in a Biological Science

In lieu of the required degree, candidates with equivalent professional experience, industry certifications, or a combination of education and relevant work experience may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three years of teaching/instructional experience in the field of study.
