Summary
Under close supervision, performs semi-skilled work in the operation of a variety of vehicles, equipment and heavy equipment in the Public Works Department.
Essential Job Functions

- Operates assigned trucks and heavy equipment to assist in the repair and maintenance of roads, properties and infrastructure in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures.
- Grades and shapes roads; repairs and maintains roadway and infrastructure as directed.
- Inspects, cleans and performs routine maintenance work on trucks and equipment as directed.
- Performs special labor assignments as directed, including fire control, accident and hazardous materials cleanup, culvert and sign maintenance, and snow and debris removal.
- Collects and hauls construction materials and debris; transports vehicles and equipment to job sites; may operate rock crushing equipment.
- Operates power equipment, welding torches and special tools as needed.
- Performs traffic control activities as directed; reports safety hazards and traffic problems.
- Observes safety rules and regulations, and assists work crews as required.
- Observes all roadway courtesies; acts in the interest of public safety and property protection as needed during emergencies.
- Completes required daily logs and reports.
- Performs other duties as assigned or required.
Qualifications
Knowledge and Skills:
- Knowledge of County policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of traffic signing and flagging procedures for road construction & maintenance projects.
- Knowledge of road maintenance and repair methods.
- Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations for heavy equipment operations and transportation.
- Knowledge of Federal, state and county safety rules and regulations, including first aid, Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulations, and drug and alcohol testing guidelines
- Knowledge of techniques of dust and noise control.
- Skill in operating various types of trucks and equipment safely and efficiently.
- Skill in maintaining equipment according to standard operating and safety procedures.
- Skill in safely using power and hand tools.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with County staff.
- Skill in effectively communicating verbally and in writing.
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED equivalent; AND two (2) years of construction, equipment maintenance, and related equipment operator experience; OR equivalent combination of education, training and experience; must obtain a valid Commercial Driver's License within 6 months of hire; special license endorsements and technical certifications may be required.
