Description

Primary Function: The Special Education Teaching Assistant supports the special education program by providing support services, instructional accommodations, and modifications to students with special needs. The Special Education Teaching Assistant is required to perform necessary and appropriate duties to ensure student(s) receive services outlined on their Individual Educational Plan (IEP). This may or may not include supporting teachers by caring for the physical, social-emotional and academic needs of students with special needs and providing additional support in the form of educational materials and exercises.

Essential Functions:

  • Performs a variety of activities pertinent to training, physical care, disciplining, and tutoring in order to develop habits, knowledge, and skills in students with special needs.
  • Supports Education Specialist(s) in delivery of IEP services.
  • Assists teachers and collaborates with peers (grade level, cluster, enrichment, special ed., volunteers) to maintain an environment conducive to learning, encouraging appropriate behavior by the students.
  • Maintains and monitors effective group and individual student behavior to provide an optimum learning environment, implementing established discipline practices and policies.
  • Assists teachers in carrying out positive reinforcement procedures and reactive strategies identified in a behavior support plan, such as prompting students to switch to functionally equivalent replacement behavior and debriefing during the school day.
  • Under the direction of the Teacher, use the following techniques to modify instruction to meet the needs of students with varying backgrounds, learning styles, and special needs:
    • Helps students use books, technology, classroom materials, and equipment to reinforce lessons.
    • Adjusts or rephrases portions of text and classroom instructions.
    • May administer informal testing for progress monitoring.
    • Provides accommodations such as small-group testing and reading-aloud test questions.
    • Supports in implementing lessons or portions of lessons to a student or a group of students, checks the accuracy of work, and presents additional assignments as directed by the Teacher.
  • Consistent with FERPA, the School’s student records policies and procedures, and as directed by the Education Specialist, keeps records related to attendance, grades, test scores, and behavior.
  • Under the direction of the Director of Special Education, maintain and update the Welligent system daily.
  • May act as a resource regarding student issues at Individual Education Plan (IEP) meetings, if requested.
  • Under the Teacher’s direction, participates in data collection on behaviors as part of behavior support plan development and implementation.
  • Administers first aid and medical assistance to provide appropriate care for medically fragile student(s), including assisting with all aspects of toileting, which may include diapering and lifting on/off the toilet, changing tables and mats when trained by appropriate staff.
  • Assists student(s) with the use and adjustment of mobility equipment, including, but not limited to, leg braces, wheelchairs, tricycles, walkers, mobile standers, crutches, and gurneys when trained by appropriate staff.
  • May obtain food from the kitchen, servefood, and feedstudents or helpthem to feed themselves.
  • Assists teachers with students who may demonstrate behaviors such as hitting, biting, scratching, and running; works with the team to implement behavior support plans and/or crisis plans when trained by appropriate staff.
  • Assists in implementing unique intervention strategies to manage aggressive student behavior.
  • Assists teachers on field trips by helping students with physical needs, maintaining discipline, and reinforcing learning situations.
  • Supervises a group of students in the temporary absence of the Teacher when notified by the Administration.
  • Share professional perspective with the Education Specialist through respectful and thoughtful dialogue to enhance instructional strategies.
  • Cooperate with all recommendations and directions from supervisors in all instructional situations.
  • Under the supervision of the Education Specialist, communicate effectively and professionally, both orally and in writing, with stakeholders to build relationships that demonstrate respect and compassion.
  • Respond to colleague communications (phone messages, emails, notes, etc.) in a respectful and timely manner.
  • Model professional behaviors and ethical standards when dealing with stakeholders and the broader community.
  • Maintain reliable, consistent attendance and punctuality.
  • Assist in yard supervision during recess and lunch periods
  • Assist in before/after school carpool
  • Periodically serve as a Lead Substitute (if appropriately credentialed).

Non-Essential Functions:

  1. Perform other duties as assigned.
  2. Assist in other school programs when necessary.

Knowledge of: Physical and emotional needs of children at various age levels; General nature and causes of physical, mental, and emotional disabilities; First aid techniques; Functioning of special equipment, such as wheelchairs and braces; Facilitation strategies and approaches to creating and maintaining small group environment of safety, respect, and learning; Curriculum accommodation and modification; Cultural and socio-economic differences in the student population; Conflict resolution strategies to support healthy social development in children; Professional skills for collaboration and teamwork with other education professionals; Written and oral communications skills.

Ability to: Deal appropriately with disruptive and abusive behaviors; Use proper English, grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure; Perform routine and repetitive tasks; Establish and maintain supportive and cooperative environment with school personnel, parents and students; Complete tasks/assignments within established timelines; Recognize when there is an unusual condition or situation and have the ability to seek assistance when necessary and appropriate, using good judgment; Gain students' confidence; Act calmly and appropriately in emergencies; Take orders and follow instructions accurately; Assist in feeding and toileting of students with special needs; Supervise & support students in small group activities; Create and maintain a safe, respectful learning environment; Meet the needs of a diverse student population; Support student social & emotional development; Work collaboratively & professionally with the Larchmont Schools team; Communicate effectively with all stakeholders to support student success; Use modern technology for instructing, communicating and reporting.

Physical Requirements: Continual speaking; standing for long periods of time; frequent sitting, reaching, walking, bending, grasping, and pinching; occasional lifting and carrying, squatting, twisting, or kneeling.

Environment: Uneven surfaces, noise, quick work pace. Requires that the incumbent work effectively under stressful situations and respond to the unpredictable behaviors of students. Frequent use of computer screen. Occasionally involves working outdoors and exposure to inclement weather. Infrequently involves exposure to traffic congestion. May rarely involve exposure to biohazardous waste.

Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications:

(*) High School Diploma;

(*) Minimum of two years of college (48 semester units completed);

(*) Valid California 30-Day Substitute Teaching Permit (preferred);

(*) Familiarity working with students in a tutoring environment;

(*) TB clearance & and DOJ fingerprint clearance;

(*) First Aid, CPR, AED certification
