The Wildlife Education Coordinator reports directly to the Director of the Lamar Bruni Vergara Environmental Science Center (LBVESC) and is responsible for the care and management of wildlife at LBVESC. This role oversees the creation and maintenance of all exhibits at the Center, including the El Paso del Indio Nature Trail, and coordinates educational activities and presentations for a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders associated with the Environmental Science Center. Additional duties include transporting animals to and from events, adhering to all relevant safety procedures, with flexibility required for work schedules.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the LBVESC Director to ensure alignment with the center’s and college’s mission.
- Demonstrate expertise in horticulture and animal husbandry, managing living exhibits that include fish, aquatic species, mammals, reptiles, and birds.
- Engage the community by overseeing outreach programs, including school presentations, guided tours, and public events; develop educational resources and deliver presentations that promote the LBVESC’s mission; participate in the animal ambassador program through public speaking, animal training, rearing, and enrichment.
- Report animal behavior changes or concerns to the Director promptly.
- Provide initial care and support for incoming wildlife.
- Ensure humane treatment of all exhibit animals according to Zoological Society Guidelines, with thorough knowledge of animal behavior and health requirements.
- Assist with maintaining exhibits, including substrate changes and regular habitat assessments for enclosures.
- Keep feed logs and required state and federal records, including maintenance and wellness logs.
- Supervise Wildlife Technicians, student employees, and volunteers, providing mentorship and guidance.
- Assist the Director in training Wildlife Technicians in exhibit maintenance, animal care, and enrichment practices.
- Manage inventory of supplies and medications, ensuring availability for daily operations.
- Design and create new exhibits, including enclosure layout, substrate selection, and habitat visuals.
- Coordinate, assist, and conduct summer camps in collaboration with Wildlife Technicians and the Operations Coordinator, covering scheduling, logistics, and staff training.
- Maintain daily communication with the Director and team via email, phone, electronic messaging, and walkie-talkies.
- Conduct animal-related research as requested by the Director.
- Collaborate with the CMRO Department on media appearances, advertising, and event promotions.
- Manage LBVESC’s social media platforms, adhering to LC branding and posting guidelines, and report any suspicious activity to the supervisor.
- Support general operations by maintaining outdoor areas and indoor facilities, including sweeping, trimming, painting, mopping, and scrubbing as needed.
- Assist with pond maintenance, including cleaning, vacuuming, and filter checks.
- Coordinate animal transport to sanctuaries or rehabilitation centers as necessary.
- Stay current on wildlife standards, trends, safety protocols, and compliance requirements.
- Participate in workshops and short courses to enhance skills in animal handling and husbandry.
- Responsible for meeting deadlines in a timely manner.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the LBVESC Director and IA Division to support the mission of Laredo College.

Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in wildlife management, zoology, biology, or related field plus 2 years of related wildlife experience or 5 years of related wildlife education/handling experience with some wildlife certifications.
- Minimum 2-year wildlife handling experience with at least one-year experience in public education of wildlife.
- Good organizational and public relations skills. Must have aquarium, plant, animal care and indoor/outdoor facility maintenance.
- International Wildlife Rehabilitation Coalition Basic Training Certificate. Must have CPR/AED certificate and CPR/First Aid for mammalians or must be received within 9 months of hire. Must obtain Food Handler Certificate from the City of Laredo. Must have a valid Driver’s License and current car insurance to travel as required. In accordance with CJ (Local) while driving on College District business, employees are required to abide by all applicable laws, rules, regulations ordinances, policies, and procedures.
