Overview

The Larimer County Department of Health and Environment (LCDHE) is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Communicable Disease Epidemiologist!

The communicable disease epidemiologist is an epidemiological and technical resource. This role includes conducting communicable disease surveillance, case investigation, and outbreak response. Works with public health and community providers to maintain quality control of surveillance data. Conducts epidemiologic analyses and special investigative projects. Prepares reports and disseminates data for the program. Educates the public and health providers on communicable diseases.

The typical schedule for this position is Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with the flexibility of a hybrid work arrangement. Specific days and hours may vary based on operational needs. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required to support emergency or urgent responses.

Responsibilities

What you’ll be doing:

  • Investigating individual disease cases, clusters, and outbreaks.
  • Conducting and completing case interviews and field investigations, including designing studies, questionnaires, and tracking systems, as well as performing data entry, analysis, and report generation.
  • Implementing disease control and prevention measures based on protocols, the State Health Department Communicable Disease Manual, CDC guidance, and best practices.
  • Providing consultation on epidemiology and infectious diseases, including working with health care providers to ensure the quality of surveillance data.
  • Offering statistical advice and technical assistance for disease surveillance, epidemiologic analysis, and data interpretation.
  • Managing and utilizing advanced mathematical and statistical methods to identify health trends and determine the causes of disease within the community.

What We're Looking For

  • Expertise in biostatistical analysis, database management, and proficiency with data-related computer applications and software.
  • Strong understanding of epidemiological principles, disease control practices, study methodologies, and the use of disease surveillance systems.
  • Knowledge of relevant protocols and procedures for disease control.
  • Experience with investigation and interview techniques.
  • Ability to write clear, concise, and scientifically accurate reports and data summaries.

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in environmental or public health, or a science-based or health care professional field/discipline, required. Master's degree in Public Health or Science in epidemiology, biostatistics, or a closely related field preferred.
  • Three (3) years of professional experience working at a state or local public health agency, health care setting, or a directly related field with duties and similar responsibilities related to epidemiology, communicable disease, and emergency preparedness and response required.
  • Possession of a valid Driver's License by date of hire required.
