JOB TITLE : Heavy Civil General Superintendent

JOB SUMMARY : The Heavy Civil General Superintendent is responsible for overseeing and managing all aspects of the day-to-day operations of a heavy civil construction company. This role involves planning, coordinating, and executing projects to ensure they are completed on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Coordinate prioritized contract start up with administrative staff and Project Manager( e; contract notifications, permits, logic for CPM schedule, designate project operation staff, ensure complete field file development, help prioritize submittals associated to schedule requirements ).
  • Coordinate / Develop project sequence with site management ( superintendents, foreman, leads).
  • Create initial equipment and personnel project requirements prioritized by startup activities including necessary materials ( E. bedding material, shoring, BMP materials).
  • Ensure proper project controls are sequenced at start of activities ( locates, survey, traffic Control, notifications and all proper permits required per the contract).
  • Evaluate crew personnel needs with necessary skill sets.
  • Solicit and acquire / dismiss manpower based on workload and / or experience and skill needs.
  • Train budgetary tracking and understanding based on production over cost.
  • Create and track all notifications of change from field to administrative staff ( RFI, unforeseen conditions, change orders, site impacts and delays ).
  • Track all rental equipment regionally.

Ensure equipment is called off rent and returned fueled.

  • Conduct site coordination pre-walks with subs prior to work scope execution.
  • Ensure company representation is onsite during all sub-related scopes of work.
  • Attend coordination meetings with client. Maintain high professionalism with client based on contract language and logic.
  • Coordinate with administrative team on pay applications ( percentage complete ).
  • Create and set production expectations with project team.
  • Ensure cost-effective operations for defined scopes of work.

  • Maintain a photo log of all production activities on project including pre, during and post evolutions. Ensure site management is also creating daily photo log through the B2W system.
  • Ensure site management is adhering to safety requirements and filling out appropriate documentation ( e.; trench logs, near miss reports, injury reports, utility strikes ).
  • Train field staff on safety compliance ( e.; proper PPE, trench requirements, soil conditions, shoring systems, site impacts, public impacts, traffic zones )
  • Elevate complex issues in management organization for support.
  • Ensure constant communication from field to office is occurring, regarding all project related items on a daily basis.
  • Ensure timely 3-week look ahead schedules are submitted weekly to the administrative team for up-to-date dialogue with contract cliental.
  • Monitor and evaluate QA / QC requirements for all project work evolutions.
  • Organize and manage all field documentation for QC and closeout requirements.

  • Ensure project team is working off updated plans, specifications and addendums prior to execution of work scopes.
  • Prioritize contract work to ensure profitability and crew focus.
  • Mentor sub and inspection coordination with site leads.
  • Ensure all contract required testing procedures are being met and documented.
  • Assess maintenance requirements of owned equipment and small tools.
  • Prioritize project personnel with superintendents based on production needs.
  • Create team unity with office staff and field personnel. Foster a common goal approach.
  • Coordinate with P.M.s to identify and minimize job cost overruns.
  • Ensure overall accountability of operations in region.
  • Foster initiative and accountability of project outcome.
  • QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Education : High School diploma, associates degree, Construction Management, or related field experience.
  • Experience : Minimum of 10 years of experience in heavy-civil construction, with at least 5 years in a managerial role.
  • Skills : Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills. Proficiency in project management software and financial management principles.
  • Knowledge : In-depth understanding of concrete construction techniques, safety regulations, and industry standards.
  • Preferred Additional Qualifications :

  • Certifications : OSHA 30, Competent person, Shoring and trenching certification
  • TECHNICAL SKILLS : Experience with advanced project management tools and software.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT : This role requires 20 percent office and 80 percent field work, with frequent travelling to project sites. Role includes extensive sitting, driving, and walking on uneven surfaces.
