Job Title: Controller
Reports to: President
Position Overview:
The Controller is a key member, responsible for maintaining and overseeing all aspects of accounting and financial reporting procedures and controls. This role requires attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
Key Duties and responsibilities include but not limited to:
Daily Duties:
General Accounting:
· Develop and implement policies, practices, and procedures.
· Responsible for General Ledger, including timely and accurate recording of all transactions.
· Oversight, training, and review of Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable functions performed by Accounting Assistant.
· Primary liaison to CPA for taxes and annual financial statement review.
Financial:
· Monthly and annual reconciliations, Journal Entries, and Register reviews.
· Maintain and update costs for grapes, bulk wine, and finished goods.
· Prepare, present accurate, timely consolidated financial statements and supporting schedules
· Monthly and ad hoc financial reporting to President and the Board, preparation of consolidated financial statements and supporting schedules.
Budgeting, Forecasting and Cashflow Management:
· Develop and manage annual budgets and forecasts.
· Monitor financial performance against budgets and provide variance analysis.
· Project, monitor and manage cash flow to ensure liquidity
· Develop long-term forecasts
· Assist in long-term financial planning and strategy.
Payroll & Human Resources:
· Payroll management through payroll provider, semi-monthly processing.
· Employee onboarding and terminations, including exit interviews
· Respond to employment inquiries and requests (unemployment, verifications, audits, etc).
· Management, monitoring, and annual maintenance of benefits (medical, 401k, workers comp).
· Handbook updates, employee trainings, PTO tracking and accruals.
Other Accounting, Logistics, Inventory & Compliance:
· Facility and storage management.
· Physical tracking, reconciliation
· Primary liaison with compliance vendor for all licensing, permits, Federal and OOS sales and excise tax reporting.
· CA sales tax - monthly prepayments and quarterly filing
· Other reporting as needed (CDFA Processor’s License, annual property tax statements, other)
· Primary liaison with IT vendor, Computer Engineering Group.
· Oversee administrative functions performed by Accounting Assistant
· Manage Annual crop insurance and liability package insurance renewals
Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
· CPA or CMA certification preferred but not required.
· Minimum of 5 years of experience in accounting or finance roles, preferably in a winery or manufacturing similar industry.
· Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks) and Microsoft Office Suite Excel.
· Strong knowledge, understanding of GAAP principles and financial reporting requirements.
· Excellent communication and interpersonal people skills.
· Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a demanding environment.
· Diligence and accuracy in all work.
· Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
Working Conditions:
· Office environment with occasional visits to winery production areas
