Job Summary:
A Medical Assistant (MA) supports healthcare professionals in providing patient care and managing administrative tasks within a medical office, clinic, or hospital. Key Responsibilities:
- Clinical Duties:
- Take and record patient vital signs (temperature, blood pressure, weight, pulse).
- Assist with patient examinations by preparing patients, explaining procedures, and helping during exams.
- Administer medications and injections as directed by healthcare providers.
- Draw blood, collect specimens, and perform lab tests.
- Sterilize and prepare medical equipment.
- Maintain patient records, documenting all patient interactions and treatment plans accurately.
- Perform EKGs and other diagnostic procedures.
- Provide basic first aid when needed.
- Administrative Duties:
- Schedule and confirm patient appointments.
- Answer phone calls and assist with patient inquiries.
- Prepare and manage patient files and medical records.
- Process billing and insurance paperwork.
- Coordinate with other medical staff and departments to ensure smooth patient care.
- Handle patient check-ins and check-outs.
- Process prescription refills and help manage inventory.
- Patient Care and Support:
- Provide emotional support and comfort to patients before, during, and after procedures.
- Educate patients on prescribed treatments, medications, and follow-up care.
- Assist with patient mobility or any special needs during their visit.
- Compliance and Safety:
- Ensure compliance with healthcare regulations and standards (e.g., HIPAA, OSHA).
- Maintain a clean and organized environment for patient safety.
- Ensure proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials.
Qualifications:
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent; completion of a recognized medical assistant program is often required.
- Certifications: Certification from a recognized organization (e.g., AAMA, AMT, or NCCT) preferred.
- Experience: Previous experience as a medical assistant is a plus, but entry-level candidates may also be considered.
- Skills:
- Proficient in clinical and administrative tasks.
- Strong communication skills for interacting with patients and medical staff.
