Position Description

Applicants MUST ATTACH a valid Nevada Peace Officer Standards Training (POST) Category II certificate (or higher) at the time of application.

Salary Information :

The salary for this position is negotiated through a collective bargaining agreement. All new employees will be hired at the minimum salary in the range and will be eligible for merit increases until reaching the maximum salary in the range.

Incumbents perform a variety of law enforcement and technical duties to support the service and enforcement of civil process.

Training, Education and Experience

  • Must possess a valid Nevada Peace Officer Standards Training (P.O.S.T.) Category II Certification (or higher).
  • Three (3) years of full-time experience in general law enforcement or civil process.
  • Equivalent to graduation from high school.
  • Must possess a valid Nevada Class C driver's license at time of appointment.

  • Personal Appearance : While on duty, and / or representing the Department, uniformed or otherwise, all Department employees will be neat and clean in their appearance in public. Employees are prohibited from attaching, affixing, or displaying objects, articles or jewelry on or through the nose, tongue, eyebrow or other exposed body part, except the ears for females, while on duty. Employees are prohibited from stretching or "gauging" their earlobes. All jewelry implants will not be exposed or visible while on duty. Tattoos or branding will not be exposed or visible while on duty and / or representing the Department. Such markings must be covered by clothing. Markings that cannot be covered by clothing will be covered using neutral-toned bandages, or patches. Makeup is not permissible to cover a tattoo. Tattoos or branding anywhere on the body that promote racism / discrimination, indecency, extremist or supremacist philosophies, lawlessness, violence, or contain sexually explicit material are prohibited.
  • Participate in the LVMPD Mental Wellness Program.
  • Physical Conditions : Vision sufficient to read the computer screen, as well as fine print in documents; hearing sufficient to hear, discriminate, localize and respond accordingly to a variety of speech and environmental sounds in a variety of situations including face-to-face communications, telephone conversations, or radio communications in accordance with Department standards; agility sufficient to twist, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach forward, and reach overhead; strength sufficient to subdue resisting individuals; endurance sufficient to perform the following : sit at personal computer terminals; stand and move around while working indoors or outdoors; alertness sufficient to be aware of surroundings at all times; all physical and mental conditions sufficient to perform the following : shoot a department-approved firearm; deploy other department-approved weapons; maintain department-approved firearms and weapons qualification.

Those items permitted will be left to the discretion of the LVMPD employees administering the examination and may be subject to a search.

  • Additional Selection Processes If you successfully complete the above selection process, you will undergo a thorough background investigation, including a polygraph exam. A polygraph examination can be stressful and may affect existing medical or psychological conditions or ongoing treatment. Candidates are encouraged to consult with their personal physicians to discuss whether the polygraph will affect a condition or treatment and then follow the guidance of their medical professional.

    The background investigation takes approximately 90 to 120 days to complete. You must also meet the LVMPD Hiring Standards.     LAS VEGAS METROPOLITAN POLICE DEPARTMENT

    DEPUTY SHERIFF BENEFITS

    Benefits are effective July 1, 2023, are based upon an 80 hour pay period in a paid status, and are subject to change.

    COMPENSATION

    CLOTHING ALLOWANCE : Annual Clothing Allowance $1,400.00 effective July 1. Newly hired employees will be entitled to a prorated clothing allowance.

    OVERTIME PAY / COMPENSATORY TIME : Employees who work overtime have the option of being paid at 1-1 / 2 times their hourly rate or receiving 1-1 / 2 hours of compensatory time. Compensatory time may not accumulate beyond 80 hours.

    SHIFT DIFFERENTIAL : Employees will receive an additional 4% shift pay for working a swing shift. Employees working a graveyard shift encompassing the hours of midnight to 5 : 00 a.m. will receive an additional 2% shift pay.

    LANGUAGE PAY : Qualified employees may receive Language Pay each pay period.

    TAXES :

    State / City - Nevada has no state tax or city income tax.

    Social Security - Employees enrolled in PERS pay no social security.

    Medicare - Medicare is deducted at the rate of 1.45%.

    WORKING HOURS : Employees work 80 hours bi-weekly. Depending upon the area of assignment, employees work an 8-hour, a 9-hour, a 10-hour, or a 12-hour shift per day.

    LEAVE AND HOLIDAYS

    ANNUAL VACATION LEAVE : Employees begin accruing vacation leave immediately at the following rates :

  • 0 - 14 years of service : 4.62 hours per pay period (3 weeks / year)
  • 15 - 19 years of service : 6.15 hours per pay period (4 weeks / year)
  • 20 years of service : 7.68 hours per pay period (5 weeks / year)
  • Vacation leave may be used after 6 months of continuous service.

    On December 31st of each year, employees may carry over a portion of accrued leave, based upon their years of service.

    Employees separating from the Department are eligible to cash out all accrued vacation if they have completed six months of continuous service.

    BEREAVEMENT LEAVE : Employees may take bereavement leave for members of their immediate family. This leave can be deducted from any available accrued leave.

    BONUS LEAVE : If a permanent employee uses sick leave (including FMLA,) leave without pay (except for military leave), or a combination thereof totaling 24, 27, 30 or 36 hours or less within a year, based on the employee's corresponding primary shift schedule, the employee will receive three (3) shifts of bonus time hours based on the employee's regular work schedule of (eight (8), nine (9), ten (10), or 12 hours) on the employee's hire date anniversary, which shall be credited to the employee's bonus leave account the following pay period. Non-accrual workers compensation salary extensions can also affect the bonus award. Employees may accrue a maximum of 240 hours of bonus time.

    HOLIDAYS : Employees receive 13 paid holidays per year. A holiday compensation plan is in place for employees who work on a holiday, or when a holiday falls on an employee's regular day off. In June and December of each year, employees may choose holiday straight time pay or holiday leave accrual as a holiday compensation option.

    PERSONAL HOLIDAY : Employees are authorized two personal holidays annually after six (6) months of continuous full-time service. These days must be used by June 30th of each fiscal year. Personal holidays must be taken as full days, and have no cash-out value.

    SICK LEAVE : Employees begin accruing sick leave immediately at the rate of 4 hours per pay period (104 hours per year), with no accrual limit. Sick leave may be used as it is accrued. Employees must have ten years of continuous service before being eligible to receive a portion of their sick leave balance upon separation from the Department.

    BENEFITS

    HEALTH / VISION / DENTAL INSURANCE : Employees are eligible for benefits on the first month after 15 calendar days of employment. LVMPD pays a percentage employee's coverage and a portion of family coverage. Deductions for employee and family coverage will be deducted on a pre-tax basis. The plan includes coverage for major medical, dental, vision, life, and accidental death & dismemberment.

    EMPLOYEE WELLNESS : Free access to services provided by the LVMPD Wellness Bureau.

    RETIREMENT : Employees are members of the State of Nevada Public Employees Retirement System (PERS). Employees are vested upon completion of 5 years in the retirement system.

    SUPPLEMENTAL INSURANCE AND CAFETERIA PLANS : Various plans are available to employees, such as :

  • Deferred Compensation (457b) : Employees may elect to make pre-tax or / and post-tax contributions of their income into an approved deferred compensation plan.
  • Flexible Spending Accounts : Employees may elect to make pre-tax contributions to a flexible spending account, to be used for unreimbursed medical expenses and dependent day care expenses.
  • Supplemental Insurance : Supplemental insurance policies are also available, such as short term disability, cancer insurance, and accident insurance. Deductions for these policies are made on an after-tax basis.
  • LVMPD Group Life Insurance, Accidental Death & Dismemberment, and In Line of Duty Death recompense at $25,000 each.
