Job Summary:

The General Manager is responsible for the overall operation and success of Miss J’s Cafe. This includes managing day-to-day activities, ensuring high standards of customer service, maintaining a positive and efficient work environment, overseeing financial management, and leading a team of cafe staff. The General Manager will also ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and company policies.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Staff Management:
    • Hire, train, and supervise all cafe staff, including baristas, cooks, servers, and other team members.
    • Schedule shifts, ensuring proper coverage during peak hours and maintaining an efficient staffing model.
    • Monitor staff performance, provide feedback, and conduct performance reviews.
    • Foster a positive and motivating work environment, ensuring team members are engaged and providing excellent service.
    • Handle employee disputes and disciplinary issues in a fair and professional manner.
  • Customer Service:
    • Ensure that all customers receive exceptional service and have a positive experience at the cafe.
    • Address customer complaints and feedback in a timely and professional manner, aiming to resolve issues quickly.
    • Oversee the quality of food and beverages, ensuring they meet the cafe’s standards and customer expectations.
    • Implement strategies to enhance customer satisfaction and loyalty.
  • Operations Management:
    • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the cafe, ensuring efficient and smooth workflow in all areas (kitchen, front of house, etc.).
    • Ensure that food and beverage preparation complies with company standards and health and safety regulations.
    • Monitor inventory levels of food, beverages, and cafe supplies; place orders as needed to maintain stock levels.
    • Supervise opening and closing procedures, ensuring the cafe is secure and all tasks are completed properly.
  • Financial Management:
    • Develop and manage the cafe’s budget, ensuring that expenses are controlled and financial targets are met.
    • Monitor daily sales and expenses, adjusting operations to optimize profitability.
    • Ensure accurate cash handling, reporting, and banking procedures.
    • Track and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) to the ownership or corporate team, including sales, labor costs, and customer feedback.
  • Marketing and Promotions:
    • Collaborate with the marketing team to create and implement promotional strategies and campaigns to attract new customers and retain regulars.
    • Utilize social media, local advertising, and community events to increase the cafe’s visibility and brand presence.
    • Ensure that seasonal or special promotions are well-executed and contribute to increased sales.
  • Health, Safety, and Compliance:
    • Ensure all health, safety, and sanitation standards are met, both front-of-house and back-of-house.
    • Stay up-to-date on local health codes and ensure that all staff follow proper food safety and cleanliness protocols.
    • Maintain the cafe’s compliance with employment laws and any other regulatory requirements.
    • Implement and enforce safety policies to prevent accidents or injuries in the workplace.
  • Reporting and Administration:
    • Maintain accurate records of staffing, sales, inventory, and other operational data.
    • Prepare and submit regular reports to ownership or corporate management.
    • Ensure proper record-keeping for payroll, accounting, and other administrative tasks.
    Skills & Qualifications:
    • Experience: Proven experience as a General Manager, Assistant Manager, or similar leadership role in a food service or hospitality setting.
    • Leadership Skills: Ability to lead, motivate, and manage a team effectively.
    • Customer Service Focus: Strong commitment to providing excellent customer service.
    • Financial Acumen: Experience in budgeting, managing costs, and driving profitability.
    • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills for interacting with customers, staff, and owners.
    • Problem-Solving: Strong decision-making skills, with the ability to handle difficult situations or complaints.
    • Organization: Strong organizational skills, including managing schedules, inventories, and day-to-day operations.
    • Time Management: Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively.
    • Technical Skills: Proficiency in POS systems, inventory management software, and Microsoft Office or similar programs.
    Job Requirements:
    • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in a managerial role, ideally in a food service, café, or restaurant environment.
    • Availability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, depending on business needs.
    • A passion for food and customer service, with a genuine interest in the cafe’s success.
    • Ability to manage stressful situations while maintaining professionalism.
    • A degree or certification in business management, hospitality, or a related field is a plus but not required.
    Physical Demands:
    • Ability to stand, walk, and move around for long periods.
    • Lifting up to 25 pounds (for stocking or carrying supplies).
    • Handling busy periods and managing multiple tasks simultaneously.
