Engineering Manager – Optoelectronics/Photonics
NOTE:
1. Remote or hybrid work is not an option. On-site presence required. Ability to relocate to Arizona.
2. No sponsorship available. Position requires unconditional authorization to work in the US without visa or sponsorship.
Daily Responsibilities:
- Growing and mentoring a product and core technology Engineering team. This includes leading a multi-disciplinary and multi-functional manufacturing engineering team designing and developing opto-electronics & photonics products (with a core focus on photodetectors). Team would consist of technologists and associates, senior engineers, engineering technicians, etc. with backgrounds in diverse fields such as Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, and Material Science.
- Relentless drive to solve manufacturing engineering problems leading to poor yield and scrap
- Ownership of failure analyses and root cause identification of customer product returns and product escapes. Implementation of corrective actions
- Recruits, trains, and evaluates all engineering personnel
- Define clear engineering project plans, resources, schedules, milestones, budgets, and contingency plans. Ensure projects meet specification, cost, and schedule. Interact and effectively collaborate with cross functional teams to ensure successful delivery of project
- Provide technical leadership in all aspects of critical projects from the initial planning phase through implementation. Assist your team in the solution of complex problems involving diverse areas of various technical disciplines
- As such, the engineering manager will have his/her own set of critical projects that he/she will directly manage hands-on with minimal to no delegation
- Stakeholder management is a core tenet of this role, namely Product Managers, Production leaders, and end-customers as needed
- Introduce engineering improvements into overall company strategy and make recommendations for the improvement and cost reduction of existing products and processes. Overall responsibility for activities as they relate to new product introduction ramp up, and continuous improvement of existing designs. This includes formulating and implementing customized test plans, test routines, test methods, and test fixtures.
- Responsibility for ensuring that project outcomes are regularly communicated with senior management and coordinated with other groups/sections within the company
- Foster culture of growth, innovation, empowerment, support, and inspire others to be their best self. As a senior member of the management team, you will be expected to lead by example and be the change agent to drive new practices, policies, and culture within the team
Experience & Skills Requirements:
- MUST HAVE (Do NOT apply if you do not meet this): Minimum cumulative 10 years of industry experience working for an Optoelectronics/Photonics manufacturing company in an engineering manager role, AND
- MUST HAVE (Do NOT apply if you do not meet this): Minimum of total 20 cumulative years of industry experience working for an Optoelectronics/Photonics manufacturing company in an engineering manager, senior product engineer, or engineering group leader role with focus in the following areas: photodetectors and photosensors (highly preferred), high speed optical components, optical sub-assemblies, passive optical components, optical/opto-mechanical/electro-optical product engineering experience
- A MS or PhD degree in Optics, Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Solid-State Semiconductor Physics is preferred
- Excellent interpersonal and communication (verbal & written) skills in English required. Capable of presenting complex technical topics in a clear and structured way, ability to moderate discussions, meetings, and projects with diverse global teams.
- Demonstrated strong leadership, collaboration, project management, problem-solving, change management, and influencing skills. Track record of delivering on large, complex product engineering projects and/or process improvement projects
Key Accountabilities:
- Technology Leadership – Strategically plans and executes the strategic engineering roadmap with other members of the leadership team to meet performance, reliability, cost, and schedule milestones as defined by the project strategic plan.
- Organizational Leadership – Leads, manages, grows, and mentors an outstanding team of engineers
- Continuous Improvement –Drives improvements in engineering and scientific processes and tools to enable a best-in-class organization.
- Customer Focus – Partners with the leadership team to realize product vision and strategic initiatives consistent with company strategy and goals.
- Results Driven - Ensure highest level of accountability in meeting or exceeding goals for engineering deliverables
- Department Leadership – Works with the various leaders and managers within the department to develop the necessary resource plan, development plans and budget to achieve the strategic plan milestones.
