We are seeking a full-time GED Instructor to provide educational services to LAYC/MMYC youth, ages 16 to 24, in Riverdale Park, Maryland. This position is 80% in person, 20% virtual (four days in person with one virtual day) after a 90-day probation period.


The GED Instructor is responsible for the General Education Development exam preparation activities and academic progress of 30-45 youth at any given time. The GED Instructor is embedded in the Workforce Readiness Team, which provides support to youth for GED Preparation and Job Readiness. The GED Instructor will:

  • Collaborate with the Workforce Readiness Team Supervisor and Job Readiness Trainer to fulfill the state and grant-mandated requirements outlined in the Workforce Readiness Program
  • Create and deliver relevant and high quality academic educational experiences for GED students.
  • Demonstrate positivity, resourcefulness, tenacity, creativity, problem-solving, openness and adaptability to an evolving program environment while maintaining a vision to meet program requirements and serve student needs.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES


Curriculum Development

  • Assist in organizing and developing GED-level and Pre-GED level curriculum materials to teach and reinforce subject matter, as well as test-taking strategy and best study practice.
  • Utilize a combination of digital education technology, educational material on paper, and other resources as needed.
  • Demonstrate commitment to professional development, maintaining an openness to growth and improving knowledge of ABE- or GED-related topics and pedagogical approaches.

Student Engagement

  • Advocate tenaciously for student’s needs and maintain frequent connection and communication with students and their support teams.
  • Connect with, inspire and motivate students to persevere.
  • Deliver differentiated instruction to students with a variety of different abilities.
  • Offer individual and small group tutoring hours.
  • Assist with the recruitment and retention of participants for the GED classes.
  • Contribute to planning and supervising culturally relevant class projects, field trips, visits by guest speakers, contests, and other experiential activities, and guide students in learning from these activities.
  • Provide support to learners with diverse educational needs and goals, including those with different learning styles, IEPs, and 504 educational plans.
  • Assist students with registration for GED Ready practice tests and the official GED exam.
  • Utilize a variety of communication, productivity, and education technology tools

Assessment

  • Administer GED practice tests and formative assessment to students, either through digital or paper practice tests
  • Analyze and report results to supervisor and students to drive teaching and program decisions

Data Management

  • Maintain organized and complete records, both paper and digital, of student enrollment, attendance, and academic progress
  • Collect, analyze, and report data of students’ progress through diagnostic and formative assessments, communicating with team lead and students.
  • Coordinate with walk-in families and online registrants, as well as maintain key partnerships with outside organizations to enroll new students.
  • Update our online database, Efforts to Outcome (ETO), to track student enrollment, information, attendance, and academic progress.
  • Report student data monthly and as needed

Department Collaboration

  • Develop positive relationships and maintain regular contact and communication with LAYC staff, coordinating relevant services for students.
  • Engage with planning and perform duties for occasional site-wide activities in the center, such as food distributions and resource fairs.
  • Provide occasional support for program or sitewide activities evenings and weekends, as needed (time is flexed or compensated toward vacation time).

Compliance

  • Adhere to all LAYC personnel policies and complete all duties as assigned by the Program Manager.
  • Stay up to date about, communicate, and enforce GED program policies; engage in policy revision or development as needed.


EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • A bachelor’s degree in Adult Education, Secondary Education, or related field; master’s degree highly desirable.
  • Unrelated bachelor’s degree with relevant master’s degree or teaching certificate and 1-2 years relevant teaching experience will be considered.
  • Experience in teaching, tutoring, or providing educational services to youth ages 16-24.


SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong knowledge of K-12 literacy and numeracy development, as well as nurturing critical thinking skills
  • Working knowledge of adult education theory, critical pedagogy, differentiation, and inclusion
  • Working knowledge of official GED 2014 testing
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with people of diverse educational, cultural, and economic backgrounds.
  • Certification in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL, TESOL, or TEFL) high desirable
  • Working knowledge of MS Office 365, Kahoot!, Quizlet, Canva, Google Slides or PowerPoint, Smartboard, or other educational tools highly desirable
  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of community and local resources.
  • Flexible schedule, including occasional evenings for school events.
  • Complete criminal and child abuse/neglect clearances.
  • Flexible, energetic, positive individual with commitment to youth development in a high quality, respectful environment.
  • Ability to work well and communicate with culturally diverse populations.
  • LAYC/MMYC requires the COVID-19 vaccine of all its employees. You will be asked to provide proof of vaccination at the time of your interview and at your onboarding.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This is largely a sedentary position that requires the ability to speak, hear, see, and lift small objects up to 10 lbs. May require the ability to travel locally and/or regionally.
