Summary:
The SOMOS and SOY Pittsburgh Youth Center Assistant is responsible for supporting the educational success of the Latinx/e youth enrolled in the bilingual SOY (Supporting Our Youth) Pittsburgh After School program and the bilingual volunteer tutoring program SOMOS. SOMOS and SOY Pittsburgh exist to improve academic outcomes for Latinx/e youth while simultaneously building students’ pride in their native language and heritage; thus preparing them for a successful future. The Assistant’s role is to collaborate closely with the SOMOS and SOY Pittsburgh Youth Center Coordinator to support all aspects of programming. This includes, but is not limited to, setting a positive example for students, tutoring students, implementing positive discipline strategies, assisting with meals and snacks, and completing other tasks and duties to help SOMOS and SOY Pittsburgh run smoothly, effectively, and safely.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Help implement the SOMOS (Strengthening Outcomes, Motivating Our Students) and SOY (Supporting Our Youth) Pittsburgh After School and Summer Programs at assigned locations.
- Assist with planning, coordinating, and facilitating lesson plans and activities with the SOMOS and SOY Youth Center Coordinator.
- Support implementing daily SOMOS and SOY Pittsburgh activities that align with program goals - academic advancement, cultural empowerment, and social-emotional development.
- Create a positive and welcoming atmosphere that empowers students to take pride in their language and heritage.
- Communicate LCC information, registration processes, and programming events effectively to families.
- Enroll new students into the SOMOS tutoring program and maintain accurate records, such as attendance and school report cards.
- Coordinate volunteer tutors with students, families, and provide follow-up support as needed.
- Assist students with homework.
- Implement positive classroom management strategies.
- Aid the Youth Programs Coordinator and Director of Educational Programs with recruitment and enrollment of students for the program.
- Work collaboratively with the SOMOS and SOY Pittsburgh staff team, Programs and Operations staff, community partners, interns, and volunteers.
- Attend relevant training and meetings.
- Remain with students at SOMOS and SOY Pittsburgh activities until parents pick them up.
- Document required information (i.e. food delivery and/or attendance/program surveys) .
- Maintain the safety and security of students at all times.
- Adhere to all policies, laws, regulations, and codes of ethics and confidentiality as outlined by federal and state laws, and Latinx/e Community Center policies and procedures.
- Perform other duties as needed.

Education, Certification(s), and/or License(s) Required:
Associate’s degree in Education, or related field; and/or equivalent work experience. Bachelor’s degree is preferred. PA Department of Education Certification Preferred Act 33/34 and FBI Clearances Complete Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse Mandated and Permissive Reporting in Pennsylvania
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
One (1) or more years of education and development of children and/or families, case management, or public education system experience. Must possess excellent computer, organizational, and data management skills. Must be bilingual: Spanish and English, and culturally sensitive to the needs of the Latino community. - Incumbent will operate in an office setting, and be required to use a computer with keyboard, telephone, or handheld mobile device for extended periods of time, and office machinery as needed.
- Individual may occasionally be required to lift, push, pull, and carry up to 20 pounds.
- Incumbent could be required to travel for offsite programming
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work:
This is a part-time position. The incumbent will be required to work on-site, at the LCC East Liberty office; typical hours are Thursday – Saturday 9:00AM to 5:00 PM. Incumbent may need to work outside of those hours as requested. Typical programming runs during the first three Saturdays of the month, and two Thursdays a month for Homework support / Open hours.

Pay: $18.00 per hour
