What are the responsibilities and job description for the Bilingual Eviction Prevention Canvasser position at Latino Economic Development Center?
About LEDC
The Latino Economic Development Center (LEDC) is a non-profit, tax-exempt community development organization founded in 1991. LEDC’s mission is to drive the economic and social advancement of low- to moderate-income Latinos and other D.C. area residents by equipping them with the skills and tools to achieve financial independence and become leaders in their communities. We achieve our mission through small business development and lending, homeownership counseling and affordable housing preservation.
The LEDC Tenant Service is hiring for two canvassers to conduct in-person outreach to tenants facing eviction in Montgomery County. This is a temporary, part-time position scheduled through the end of June 2025, with the possibility of an extension. We are looking for canvassers who are available to canvass around 20 to 29 hours / week and go to court on Wednesdays and Fridays for Failure to Pay Rent cases. The position has a flexible schedule but requires some evening and weekend availability.
About the project
The Eviction Prevention in Communities project has the primary goal of stopping evictions in Montgomery County and keeping tenants in their homes. We do this by canvassing tenants at risk of eviction and connecting them with legal resources and with rental assistance programs. We also conduct where tenants at risk of eviction can come to learn more about the legal eviction process in DC, speak with other tenants who are currently or have previously been through the eviction process, and get support for their own eviction case or mitigate their own risk of eviction. The secondary goal of this project is to educate tenants in Montgomery County and lay the groundwork for future tenant-led campaigns around evictions, displacement, housing conditions, or other related issues.
The canvasser will be required to attend biweekly meetings with Montgomery County DHCA/HHS and a monthly meeting with DHCA and community base organizations to help facilitate or assist with logistics. The canvasser will also be required to have a consistent weekly output of doors knocked, and to coordinate with their manager to set fixed canvassing hours.
