Position Title: DOJ Accredited Representative in Training

Reports To: Program Manager

Classification: Part-time, Non Exempt, 0.75 FTE, 30 hrs per week

Compensation: $23.00 per hour

CANDIDATE PROFILE

Latino Network seeks a bilingual, mission driven and community service mindset individual with bi-cultural proficiency to be trained and accredited as a DOJ Accredited Representative to provide counsel to immigration clients, complete immigration forms, and represent clients at U.S. Citizenship and immigration Services (USCIS) interviews. The ideal candidate will be fully accredited by the DOJ but the first year LN-accredited representative only can provide services as partially accredited as she/he/they gains more experience.

Position Summary

The DOJ Accredited Representative provides essential legal assistance to immigrants and their families in immigration law matters. The role involves direct representation(post-accreditation). Regular client meetings to assess eligibility to relief, gathering relevant facts and documentation, and completing necessary forms for immigration submission. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a high interest in immigration law, effective client communication, and engage in education and advocacy. We need a compassionate leader dedicated to delivering high quality services and integrity, neighborliness and tenacity. The first 9-12 months of this position is dedicated to training to prepare for final exams and obtain the DOJ accreditation.

Primary Duties And Responsibilities

In the first 9-12 months,

  • Dedicate 15 hours per week to training and learning through the Equity Corps Colibri Fellowship and 15 hours per week to perform duties related to Oregon Worker Relief (OWR) such as Universal Representation navigations and supporting Know-Your-Rights training sessions with the public.
  • Coordinate and assist with the provision of outreach and educational workshops for the immigrant community and the public about immigration issues and immigration law, including presenting to and training community groups and other service providers.
  • Provide project management with the Advocacy Department and immigration services team to prepare Latino Network for DOJ Recognition, including updating policies and procedures, building a legal resources library and standing up digital tools for later case management workflows when DOJ Recognition and Accreditation are acquired

Upon DOJ Accreditation,

  • Provide legal assistance, consultation and representation in immigration matters, maintain a case-load in family-based cases, and naturalization matters before USCIS. Conduct comprehensive client intakes providing advice, referrals, and evaluating cases for representation.
  • Conduct client interviews, research legal matters, complete declarations, supporting documentation and legal forms for submission, remain responsive to clients, prepare and/or represent clients at interviews before USCIS, organize and maintain compliant client files, enter client and case data in relevant databases.
  • Develop and maintain strategic relationships with faith and labor allies, attorneys, government agencies, students, and other community allies and stakeholders.
  • Participate in continuing education as needed to provide culturally informed and competent representation in all matters, and to obtain and maintain DOJ Accreditation.
  • Collaborate with the Manager of Immigration Services to prepare funding applications and to provide timely, accurate reports for billable services and grant funding requirements.
  • Actively partner with ECO for ongoing legal guidance and attend relevant meetings with ECO and other legal services providers
  • Other duties as assigned based on the program's needs, including general administrative tasks.

Requirements

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • English and Spanish bi-cultural proficiency required, ability to translate general communications, converse with staff regarding the scope of work, either on a 1-1 setting or in group/ presentation.
  • Complete all training and final exams to become a DOJ Accredited Representative
  • Excellent research and writing skills and ability to communicate with a diverse audience;
  • Ability to publicly represent Latino Network, comfort with speaking in front large groups and think critically in high stake meetings with community and partner institutions;
  • Some knowledge of immigration law and experience working in a legal setting is preferred.
  • Ability to maintain discretion with regards to confidential matters and maintain confidential records.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage time while prioritizing tasks to meet key organizational deadlines.
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptive to successfully achieve the functions of the position as described in the job responsibilities.
  • Takes initiative and maintains proactive communication.
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Employee service mindset, resourceful, outcomes-oriented and able to build strong relationships.
  • Proficient in Adobe, Microsoft Office Suite.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, and use stairways to climb to multiple floors within an office building, and talk or hear. This position will work from home and onsite as needed depending on the project or coverage needed. The employee may be required to occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds. The employee is occasionally required to use hands and fingers to type or dial, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, and reach with hands and arms. The employee may be required to perform minimal heavy lifting and walking during peak events and prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Latino Network is a highly engaged work environment with satellite operations and positions performing work both onsite and remotely. This position requires frequent computer use. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
