Job Title: Educational Assistant – Special Education
Location: Laupahoehoe Community Public Charter School
Reports To: Special Education Teacher / School Administration
Employment Type: Full-Time

Position Summary:

LCPCS is seeking a dedicated Educational Assistant – Special Education to support teachers in providing individualized instruction and accommodations for students with disabilities. This role is essential in fostering an inclusive, hands-on learning environment that ensures academic success for all students. The ideal candidate is compassionate, adaptable, and committed to empowering students with diverse learning needs PreK-12.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist the special education teacher in implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and accommodations.
  • Support students with disabilities in both general and special education settings through differentiated instruction, behavioral intervention and hands-on activities.
  • Provide one-on-one or small group assistance to reinforce learning concepts and promote student engagement.
  • Utilize assistive technology and adaptive learning tools as needed.
  • Monitor student progress, document observations, and communicate effectively with teachers and support staff.
  • Assist with classroom management, behavior support, and social-emotional learning strategies.
  • Facilitate inclusion by supporting students’ participation in school activities and peer interactions in a variety of settings.
  • Provide personal care assistance (if required), including mobility support, feeding, and hygiene needs.
  • Prepare learning materials and modify assignments based on individual student needs.
  • Collaborate with teachers, therapists, and administrators to ensure student success.
  • Uphold confidentiality and compliance with state and federal special education regulations.
  • Understanding of and respect for Hawaiian culture, values, and traditions, with a willingness to integrate them into teaching and practice.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Education, Special Education, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience working with children with disabilities in an educational setting is preferred.
  • Knowledge of special education strategies, behavior management, and individualized instruction.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and teamwork skills.
  • Patience, flexibility, and a passion for supporting diverse learners.
  • Ability to lift/move students if necessary and assist with physical needs.
  • CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
