Position/Title:  Grade 5 Teacher at Laurel School’s Butler Campus

Appointment:  School Year 2025/2026

Reports To:   Associate Director of Grades 3-5 and Outdoor Prekindergarten at Butler

Position Summary

This position is based at Laurel’s Butler Campus, our 150-acre outdoor learning environment. As a homeroom teacher, this position entails the design, detailed planning, and instruction of child-centered, interdisciplinary, place-based curricula that integrate the outdoors with language arts, math, science, and social studies.  Teachers work collaboratively with a grade-level team and with specialist teachers in world languages, art, music, physical education, and dance. Additionally, candidates might have previous experience with or a desire to develop outdoor leadership, such as Project Adventure, NOLS, or Wilderness First Responder.


Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Preparation and implementation of daily lessons
  • Assignment and timely evaluation of all relevant class work
  • Design and implementation of appropriate, authentic assessments in each core curricular area
  • Comprehensive, ongoing documentation of student progress
  • Preparation of regular, detailed rubrics and formal narrative reports on student progress
  • Assessment and support of students
  • Integration of the outdoors into curricular and instructional experiences
  • Collaboration with other members of the faculty and staff
  • Participation in faculty and staff meetings
  • Effective and timely communication in person, through email and through voice mail with varied school constituencies
  • Support of divisional and school-wide initiatives 
  • Supervision and/or participation in non-academic activities, i.e., lunch, recess, and arrival/dismissal
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

The successful candidate ideally holds a graduate degree and has 3 or more years of teaching experience. This opening is for a teaching position at our Butler Campus -- interested candidates must embrace the outdoors and be interested in place-based education and curriculum development. Experience teaching or working in an outdoor learning environment is beneficial. She or he must possess a positive attitude, excellent written and verbal skills, strong organizational skills, and proven success within a work setting that requires collaboration, cooperation, and collegiality.  The candidate must possess or acquire and maintain a State of Ohio issued teaching license or non tax certificate.
