Job Description

Career Guidance Counselor

 

QUALIFICATIONS:  Eligible for a Certificate in Guidance Counseling

 

REPORTS TO: Principal

 

JOB GOALS: To work toward the goals and objectives as set forth by the Carolina Alliance for Technology-Youth Career Connect Grant; to consult with and assist teachers, parents, and staff to enhance their effectiveness in helping students; to protect the confidentiality of student records, and to provide appropriate support to secondary educational programs.

  

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Curriculum Activities

  1. Present information to students in their classrooms relative to the guidance curriculum.
  2.     Assist with IGPs, scheduling, advising, and enrollment.
  3. Meet with small groups of students outside the classroom to respond to identified interests or needs.
  4. Conduct or coordinate presentations and/or seminars to provide information regarding career   exploration as needed or requested.

 

Individual Planning

  1. Assist students in developing immediate and long-range plans by analyzing and evaluating students’ abilities, interests, skills and achievement.
  2. Work with assigned students using varied resources in planning personal, educational, and occupational goals.
  3. Assist students in making the transition from grade to grade, from school to career, or from school to additional education and training.

 

Responsive Services

  1. Provide individual counseling for students in the areas of personal/social, educational/academic, and career education.
  2. Provide small group counseling based on student surveys of interest and need.
  3. Provide consultation and feedback to parents, staff members, and community agencies regarding strategies to help students.
  4. Make referrals to outside sources when extended counseling or support is necessary.
  5. Counsel and support students and their families facing emergency situations and make appropriate

outside referrals.

  1. Provide campus wide programs for students to address personal/social, educational/academic, and career education concerns.

 

System Support

 

  1. Promote positive working relationships with students, staff, and members of the community.
  2. Serve in an advisory capacity to support other programs in the school and community and to gain support for the CAT program.
  3. Pursue continuous professional growth by keeping current with educational developments and literature in the field of school guidance.
  4. Develop and maintain a library of pertinent information available to students, parents, and staff.
  5. Perform other tasks and assume other responsibilities as may from time to time be assigned.

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 195 Days

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervises students and other activities as directed by the building principal.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as policy and procedure manuals, and state reports. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information to administrators, top management, public groups/community, and Board of Education

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and the ability to compile and interpret data.

 

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to define problems, gathers data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

 

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Ability to develop effective working relationships with staff, students, parents and the school community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely.  Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and the Board of Education policies.  Excellent time management and organizational skills, ability to analyze large amounts of information and develop appropriate programs for students and families based on grant, school, and district goals, ability to work independently and with others to achieve goals.

The noise level in the work environment is quiet. The employee is continuously interacting with the students, parents and staff.  

 

 TRAVEL: This job requires local travel. Travel will primarily be between Laurens County School District 56 and Laurens County School District 55. Some travel to other locations in-state may also be necessary.
