Position Description:
A key member of the editorial team, the departments editor facilitates the curation, editing, and formatting of regular and recurring sections of Photonics Media’s magazines, posts content to the company’s magazine webpages, and handles administrative tasks for the department. Duties also include occasional copyediting and proofreading, assisting in the building of assignments for contributing and staff editors, and editorial research as-needed. The position is based in Pittsfield, MA and not available for remote work.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Job Functions:
- Magazine departments. Curate, edit, and format departments for Photonics Spectra, Vision Spectra, and BioPhotonics magazines, coordinating with senior editors, news editors, copy editors, the graphics team, and contributors. Format and file backup source material. Author “Lighter Side” and “Postscript” columns. Coordinate with industry companies and academic institutions to obtain relevant imagery and backup materials for news content.
- New product writeups. Edit, format, and post new product listings for speedy publication, to ensure 24-hour turnaround when possible.
- Administration. Gather and track publishing agreements and maintain up-to-date filings with the Library of Congress. Import key industry contacts into contact management system.
- Newsletter Production. Compile editorial content for all digital newsletters, including the weekly Photonics Spectra and multiple other recurring newsletters.
- Conference previews. Draft conference previews for inclusion in conference newsletters and within the print publications, coordinating with trade show marketing and event staff as necessary to obtain information and imagery.
Other Job Functions:
- Assist senior editors in editing non-feature magazine content for grammar, style, and accuracy.
- Participate in planning meetings to help develop annual editorial calendars and monthly print and online publications.
- Author business and research news items for publication on Photonics.com, BioPhotonics.com, and Vision Spectra.com as directed by the News Editor.
- Contribute to long-form article content from the assignment-building and research stages through to developing final copy.
- Contribute to contact databases for publications/articles.
- Facilitate uploading and online publishing of special sections and editorial content to Photonics.com, BioPhotonics.com, and Vision Spectra.com as-needed.
- In collaboration with the News Editor and/or appropriate senior editor, ensure information/action items received through shared Editorial Department inboxes is directed to the appropriate contact in other departments in a timely manner.
- Assist with other duties and projects as assigned.
Job Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree in journalism, communications, English, or a related field strongly desired.
- Familiarity with the editorial production process preferred (design, editing, proofreading.)
- Proficient use of Microsoft Office software including Word, Excel, and Outlook, and experience with internet research including use of search engines.
- Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required, both written and oral, as well as problem-solving abilities.
- Must be organized, efficient, attentive to detail, able to manage multiple projects, and tasks with aggressive deadlines. Commitment to the company’s culture and quality service standards.
- Ability to effectively utilize all general office equipment, take direction and professionally interact with clients, other employees, supervisors, and senior management of the company.
