Solo Law Firm seeks a part-time remote contract legal assistant to support an attorney and paralegal in a post-conviction and criminal defense practice.
Candidate must be demonstrably reliable, trustworthy, hard working, results-oriented, and able to follow instructions.

General Duties:
The Legal Assistant will support attorneys in criminal defense and post-conviction matters, including habeas corpus petitions, sentence modification and review, and general criminal defense. This role requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
Required:
- Detail-oriented and organized
- Ability to independently manage multiple workflows and deadlines
- Proficient in MS Word and MS Excel
- Proficiency in legal research and writing.
- Prior experience as a legal assistant or paralegal.
- Excellent English verbal and written.
Preferred:
- Familiarity with habeas corpus and criminal defense.
- Adobe Acrobat Pro.
- Needles or Needles Neos.
Key Responsibilities - including, but not limited to:
- Habeas Corpus Assistance:
- Preferred: Research case law, statutes, and procedural rules relevant to habeas corpus petitions.
- Preferred: Draft initial pleadings, motions, and petitions for attorney review.
- Required: Collect and organize case documentation, including trial transcripts, appellate records, and client correspondence.
- Required: Coordinate with courts and correctional facilities to gather necessary records and ensure timely filing of motions.
- Sentence Modification and Review:
- Required: Assist attorneys in preparing motions for sentence modifications, including gathering supporting documentation such as character letters and rehabilitation records.
- Preferred: Analyze sentencing guidelines and compare them with case specifics to identify possible grounds for modification.
- Required: Maintain regular communication with clients and family members regarding the status of their applications and hearings.
- General Criminal Defense:
- Required: Organize and manage case files, ensuring all documents are up to date and accessible.
- Preferred: Prepare trial binders and assist with trial preparation, including coordinating witness schedules and summarizing evidence.
- Required: Monitor case deadlines and court appearances, ensuring compliance with procedural requirements.
- Client Communication and Support:
- Required: Act as a liaison between clients, attorneys, and external stakeholders (e.g., court clerks, opposing counsel).
- Required: Provide clients with updates about their cases and explain legal processes in a clear, accessible manner.
- Required: Assist with client intake by collecting detailed case histories and documenting key information.
- Administrative Duties:
- Required: Schedule meetings, court appearances, and deadlines on behalf of the attorney.
- Required: Maintain and update cases in case manamagement system.
- Required: Assist with billing and case expense tracking.
Salary commensurate with experience
