Spray Technician Experience and Requirements
1. Mixing and applying chemicals/pesticides such as herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides to lawns, golf courses, and other landscaped areas.
2. Identifying weeds, plant diseases, and pest problems, then selecting and applying appropriate treatments.
3. Possessing current state certification or licensing as a pesticide applicator.
4. Having a valid driver’s license and 3-5 years of relevant experience.
5. Operating and maintaining grounds keeping equipment, including mowers, tractors, sprayers, and other power tools.
6. Being able to lift and carry materials weighing 20-50 pounds.
7. Having the ability to work in various environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures, humidity, and exposure to chemicals.
8. Ensuring compliance with safety regulations and maintaining equipment.
9. Providing excellent customer service when interacting with clients.
10. Maintaining accurate records of chemical usage, inventory, and work performed.
11. Complying with state and federal regulations regarding pesticide application and storage.
12. Performing routine safety inspections on spraying equipment and maintaining chemical storage areas.
13. Possessing advanced knowledge of pest control techniques, including inspection, identification, and treatment of infestations.
14. Understanding proper calibration of pesticides, fertilizers, and herbicides used in the industry.
Responsibilities
- Chemical Application: Mixing and applying pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers to lawns, golf courses, or other areas while adhering to safety and environmental regulations.
- Equipment Operation: Operating and maintaining spray equipment, such as sprayers, spreaders, tractors, and other machinery used for chemical applications.
- Maintenance Tasks: Performing general grounds maintenance duties like mowing, weeding, pruning, and irrigation repairs.
- Inspection and Diagnosis: Identifying weeds, pests, or plant diseases and selecting appropriate treatments.
- Record Keeping: Maintaining accurate records of pesticide usage, equipment maintenance, and work performed.
- Safety Compliance: Following safety procedures to avoid exposure to chemicals and ensuring proper storage of hazardous materials.
Skills and Qualifications
- Technical Knowledge: Familiarity with pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, and application techniques. Knowledge of plant care best practices such as Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is often required.
- Equipment Skills: Ability to operate and maintain various types of spray equipment and tools.
- Physical Ability: Capability to lift heavy objects (up to 50–60 pounds), work outdoors in varying weather conditions, and perform physically demanding tasks.
- Licensing Requirements: Many positions require or prefer candidates to hold a Commercial Pesticide Applicator License or equivalent certification within a specified timeframe after hiring.
Work Environment
Spray Technicians often work outdoors in various conditions, including heat, cold, or humidity. They may also be exposed to chemicals, mechanical parts, or moderate noise levels. Weekend or holiday shifts are sometimes required.
