Founded in 2001, LEARN is a network of high-performing college preparatory, tuition-free public elementary and middle schools with the mission of providing children with the academic foundation and ambition to earn a college degree. There are 11 LEARN Schools serving 4,100 students in grades PK-8 across Chicago, Waukegan, North Chicago, and Washington, D.C.

About the Opportunity

The Behavior Interventionist will serve as a key member of the Student Support Services Team and School Based Team in working with parents, teachers and other partners in providing a holistic approach to design behavior modification plans for identified students. Behavioral Interventionists do not provide direct therapy, rather, you will provide assessment, program design and monitoring of treatment interventions. You will meet with students whose behavior warrants intervention, to prevent behavior from escalating and developing behavior tracking and intervention programs. In addition to a specialized skill set, success in the position required demonstration of a genuine concern for students, parents and teachers in a climate characterized by high personal and student expectations. You must be able to work cooperatively with parents and generate confidence in the teacher, team and school community at large.

Please note that this is a 12-month position.


What Youll Do:
As a Behavior Interventionist, your critical tasks will include but not limited to:

Essential Job Functions:

  • Acting as a liaison between the school and parents for the purpose of supporting individual student development goals
  • Assisting in developing interventions and behavior plans for the purpose of providing a safe and nurturing educational environment for students with challenging behaviors
  • Supporting teachers by providing tools to assist students in developing routines and structures conductive to a positive learning environment
  • Conducting workshops, training, in-service presentations, etc. in classroom management techniques and other topics for the purpose of developing skills and establishing effective relationships with behaviorally or emotionally disturbed students
  • Participating in a variety of meetings, workships and committee for the purpose of conveying and/or fathering information required to perform functions
  • Serving as an active member of the RTI Team
  • Responsible for designing and implementing behavioral strategies for students as an intervention ahead of the official formation of a behavioral plan
  • Attending IEP meetings and assisting with Manifestation Determination meetings for students on his caseload
  • Tracking and analyzing office referrals to improve school-wide culture
  • Conducting classroom observations and giving teachers feedback on classroom management plans and systems
  • Handling infractions that fall under Group 1-2 Acts of Misconduct
  • Facilitating peer mediation
  • Observing and documenting behavior of individual students; maintaining accurate logs of student progress
  • Providing parents with effective outside referrals for outside services
  • performing other related duties as assigned

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

Proof of full COVID-19 vaccination or a valid medical or religious exemption required.

Behavior Interventionists will be working in a busy and active environment. There may be a number of activities and situations happening at once, and the Teacher will have to supervise all children at all times. Majority of work will be performed in a general classroom/school environment. May be asked to participate and attend organization sponsored events and meetings, such as field trips and network professional development, potentially after school hours.

Behavior Interventionists may be lifting and carrying children and equipment, and may spend time sitting on the floor or child sized furniture. Nature of work requires an ability to operate standard business office equipment. Requires the ability to communicate and exchange information, collect, compile and prepare work documents, set-up, and maintain work files. Teachers will also be expected to maintain classroom equipment and furniture in clean condition. Will frequently physically move moderate distances indoors and outdoors throughout the community or building with children including climbing stairs. Physical demands require to stand, bend, reach high and low, stoop, walk around the classroom, and kneel upwards of 60% of the day. In addition, walking up and down stairs several times a day. Must be able to lift, push and pull up to 25 pounds for short periods of time.
