The Berkeley Lab's Engineering Division is hiring a Cryogenic Engineer to provide technical expertise in cryogenic technology for scientific and engineering projects. The role focuses on applying thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, systems and controls in cryogenics to develop innovative solutions that meet experimental and scientific requirements. Responsibilities include designing, developing, and managing sub-projects within larger research programs at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), with tasks ranging from conceptualization to implementation. This is a dynamic, matrix-based position, requiring flexibility as assignments evolve.
What You Will Do :
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to meet scientific, cryogenic, mechanical, vacuum, instrumentation, controls, and safety requirements.
- Design, analyze, develop specifications, and oversee procurement, fabrication, installation, and testing of cryogenic systems and equipment.
- Conduct complex analyses (thermal, hydraulic, structural, cryogenic process, cryogenic safety, process hazards) using tools like FEA, CFD, and HAZOP.
- Document and communicate findings through reports, presentations, drawings, and publications; participate in reviews and meetings.
- Assist colleagues beyond immediate responsibilities and mentor post-doctoral researchers and students.
- Serve as a resource for peers and contribute innovative solutions to lab needs.
- Comply with EH&S policies and foster a safety-conscious culture.
- Promote IDEA (inclusion, diversity, equity, and accountability) initiatives.

The expected salary for this position is $106,000.00 - $129,000.00, which fits into the full salary of $94,164.00 - $158,856.00 annually depending upon the candidate’s skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.
Cryogenic Engineer Level 3 :
The expected salary for this position is $130,000.00 - $158,000.00, which fits into the full salary of $115,176.00 - $194,340.00 annually depending upon the candidate’s skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.
