Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's (LBNL) Accelerator Technology & Applied Physics Division (ATAP) has an opening for a Deputy Director to join the team.

In this exciting role, you will be responsible for overseeing, coordinating and developing the design of colliders and large accelerator facilities. This includes work on the Electron Ion Collider Project both directly and through coordination of collaborations. It also includes exploration of future accelerator facilities, including Higgs factories and 10TeV Parton of Mass Energy Frontier colliders, and associated accelerator technologies and test facilities. This work will explore a wide range of basic and applied science in accelerator technologies and how they can be combined to enable future colliders for high energy physics and nuclear physics as well as the interface of collider relevant technologies with nearer term applications

The Deputy Director for Colliders and Accelerator Facilities will serve as a member of the leadership team of the Division, working closely with ATAP Division management. The focus of the role is building collaborative relationships with other Divisional and Laboratory programs, as well as collaborations outside of LBNL, both domestically and internationally. The Deputy Director for Colliders and Accelerator Facilities will lead teams of scientists, engineers, and technicians and assist in identifying future research opportunities, pursuing new funding, and preparing research proposals. The role also requires working collaboratively with ATAP scientists, engineers, postdocs, technicians, and students, documenting and communicating results of work in peer-reviewed journal publications and oral presentations, and participating in meetings, conferences, and reviews. The individual will serve as a mentor and role model to members of the Division.

What You Will Do:

  • Provide strong engagement with the Electron-Ion Collider, including substantive personal work scope and leadership in the collaboration and organization to connect and lead others in the Division.
  • Provide strong engagement with Higgs Factory efforts, including substantive personal work scope and leadership collaborations and organization to connect and lead others in the Division.
  • Broad experience in collider technologies and alternatives at the 10 TeV parton Center of Mass scale, and ability to lead future research efforts on design for such colliders across technologies.
  • Develop new initiatives advancing a long-term research vision of colliders and a strategic plan aligned with DOE and national goals, in collaboration with Division and Laboratory leadership.
  • Foster strong relationships with partner divisions, laboratories and institutions, and effectively generate and manage project roles. Address management and resource challenges, working with Division staff.
  • Participate strongly in advisory committees, community planning and review activities.
  • Mentor students and scientists to develop and advance accelerator talent, in the Division and community.
  • Disseminate research results via publications in refereed journals and presentations.
  • Exercise independent judgment to solve complex problems using ingenuity, creativity, and scientific principles.
  • Participate in Divisional planning, and develop relationships and interact with staff in the Division, Laboratory and externally.
  • Adhere to Environment, Safety, and Health (EH&S) policies and practices. Maintain a safe working environment, engaging staff and ensuring the proper safety processes.
  • Actively support the Lab's commitment to stewardship and workforce development values by following best practices; engaging staff at all levels; and through recruitment and promotion.

What is Required:

  • Ph.D. in Accelerator Physics or equivalent. Demonstrated excellence in the field. Significant years of experience beyond customary highest degree appropriate to the discipline.
  • Strong record of research accomplishments, as evidenced by scholarly publications, development of facilities, and funded research grants.
  • Experience and demonstrated competence in the management of scientific projects and organizations, and in collaborative science with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Recognized as an international expert/leader in the areas of colliders and accelerators.
  • Broad and in-depth technical knowledge and significant expertise in accelerator physics and awareness of the challenges of accelerator technology and the needs of users of accelerators.
  • Demonstrated ability to define scientific frontiers and provide technical direction and effective leadership to collaborations among a diverse group of scientists, engineers, and technical personnel.
  • Successful track record of developing initiatives and programs, obtaining funding to support staff and the ability to develop and maintain an independent research program.
  • Effective organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with a diverse group at management level, both internally and externally.
  • Demonstrated teaching and mentoring capability.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with extremely high levels of technical knowledge, ingenuity, and creativity.
  • Demonstrated ability to work and manage in a research group environment and prepare research results for publication and presentation at seminars and scientific meetings.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
  • The full salary range of this position is between $12,809 to $30,745 per month and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $17,080 to $25,000 per month depending upon the candidate's skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience plus also aligned with the internal peer group. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position.
