POSTED ON 3/27/2025

The Molecular Foundry, one of five U.S. Department of Energy Nanoscale Science Research Centers, is a multidisciplinary user facility that supports researchers from around the globe. We provide world-class tools and expertise that help our diverse community push the boundaries of nanoscience.

As a key member of the Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) team within the Molecular Foundry, you'll play a central role in enabling safe, efficient, and compliant laboratory operations. From managing chemical waste and supporting training to advising on the entire chemical lifecycle, you'll ensure our user facility continues to meet the highest safety standards.

What You Will Do:

At Level 1:

  • Manage chemical waste processes and ensure proper accumulation, labeling, and logging.
  • Transport hazardous and chemical waste from labs to designated accumulation areas.
  • Monitor biological and radiological waste streams; provide guidance as needed.
  • Conduct routine walkthroughs of lab spaces to identify and report hazards or non-compliance.
  • Collaborate with EH&S waste Generator Assistants and communicate identified issues to stakeholders.
  • Deliver division-specific safety and waste management training to staff and users.

At Level 2, you'll also:

  • Provide expert guidance on chemical lifecycle management (procurement to disposal).
  • Serve as a key contact for EH&S matters across the division.
  • Participate in Lab-wide safety committees and working groups.
  • Monitor critical EH&S systems (e.g., toxic gas detection, fire alarms, oxygen deficiency).
  • Identify facility-related hazards and initiate work orders for resolution.
  • Use EH&S applications to manage activities, chemical inventories, and subcontractor reviews.
  • Support the user proposal safety review process, serving as backup reviewer to the EH&S Manager.

What is Required:

  • Bachelor's degree and 2-3 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination.
  • Knowledge of chemical waste management practices and regulations.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative.
  • Excellent communication skills; able to train and work effectively with diverse groups.
  • A collaborative approach to problem solving.

In addition to above, at Level 2:

  • Bachelor's degree and 5 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination.
  • Deep understanding of chemical lifecycle management and EH&S regulations.
  • Experience advising teams and managing complex safety systems.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
  • If hired at a level 1:
    • This position is expected to pay $76,332.00-$95,400.00, which fits within the full salary range of $76,332.00-$128,808.00.
  • If hired at a level 2:
    • This position is expected to pay $98,400.00-$123,000.00, which fits within the full salary range of $98,400.00-$166,032.00.
  • Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, and aligned with the internal peer group.
  • As a condition of employment, the finalist will be required to disclose if they are subject to any final administrative or judicial decisions within the last seven years determining that they committed any misconduct, are currently being investigated for misconduct, left a position during an investigation for alleged misconduct, or have filed an appeal with a previous employer.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
