Machine Learning and Feedback Control Project Scientist

In this exciting role, you will work in the Scientific Data Division at Berkeley Lab as part of the Computational Biosciences Group to perform research into control theory for biological systems (neural populations, bioreactors) and development of neuromorphic computing circuit primitives. This role has the specific focus of developing ML methods to assess the feedback controllability of neural population dynamics recorded from brain organoids, working with applied mathematicians on evaluation of surrogate models of bioreactors, and developing/applying ML tools based on systems identification and information theory to assess the complexity of single neurons. This position requires a high-degree of team work and interdisciplinary activities.

What You Will Do:

• Perform research in machine learning methods based on control theory and information theory applied to problems in neuroscience, neuromorphic computing, and bioreactors automation.
• Prepare write-up, attend meetings, etc.
• Write manuscripts.
• Contribute to grant proposals.
• Analyze data from projects, make plots, present results.

What is Required:

• Ph.D. degree in Physics or a related field.
• In depth experience with control theory, information theory, and machine learning for analysis of single neuron and neural population data.
• Experience with scientific programing languages (e.g., C/C , Python, and Matlab).
• Experience with high-performance computing.
• Experience working in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment and exhibit good communication skills.

Desired Qualifications:

• Experience with fitting parametric models to neural population data.

Notes:

• This is a full time, 2 years, term appointment that may be renewed to a maximum of five years.
• This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
• The full salary range of this position is between $91,484 to $219,562 per year and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $121,983 to $170,766 per year depending upon candidates' full skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.
• This position is subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
• Work may be performed on-site, hybrid. The primary location for this role is Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Work must be performed within the United States.
