Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab), a pioneer in research and science, has an immediate opening for a Science Engagement Engineer 3 / 4 for its Scientific Networking Division.

In this exciting role, you will be a member of the division’s Science Engagement Team. The group is responsible for working directly with DOE scientists to enable them to effectively utilize ESnet’s high-speed data transfer services for new scientific discoveries. These services support scientists to participate in worldwide collaborations and utilize world-class and geographically dispersed experimental and computing facilities for their science.

What You Will Do, if hired at a level 3 :

  • Support ESnet’s technical collaboration with DOE Office of Science (DOE / SC) Program Office science programs. Understand project requirements for networking, storage, compute, and other needs, ensuring effective outreach and support for diverse scientific workflows. Act as a liaison between DOE / SC projects and ESnet operations, coordinating efforts to align with DOE’s Integrated Research Infrastructure planning.
  • Collaborate internally to plan and conduct semi-annual technical reviews with DOE / SC program managers, Principal Investigators (PIs), and other stakeholders to assess data needs and inform ESnet service investments. Provide direct design consultations to PIs on networking and compute strategies, ensuring effective service for scientific experiments.
  • Support horizon scanning and the implementation of emerging technologies (e.g., AI, cloud, edge computing) to expand ESnet’s service offerings. Contribute to outreach strategies, engage with national and international research networks, and participate in government and educational initiatives to support holistic data strategies for DOE Science programs.
  • Foster cross-agency partnerships, contribute to technical publications, and engage with peers at DOE sites and external collaborators. Oversee procurement and vendor management, ensuring alignment with DOE and LBNL contracting regulations to support science networking and co-design efforts.

In Addition to Above, if hired at a level 4 :

  • Develop skills and work with a team to identify, classify, and resolve network performance issues. Lead technical workshops, seminars, and consultations on network design (including storage and compute), coordinating with national centers of excellence.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently identify and deploy new capabilities that enhance scientific program efficiency. Experience scaling test programs into functional services, managing contracts, technology risks, policies, and collaborators.
  • Recognized as a leader and innovator in the technical community or science support field.
  • What is Required, if hired at a level 3 :

  • BS degree in Computer Science or Engineering and / or Scientific field, and / or related scientific co-design or support experience.
  • A minimum of 4 years of professional experience that bridges network engineering concepts with developing or supporting scientists in utilizing services to improve / augment their science workflows for accelerated results.
  • Background or experience in working directly with researchers in support of their science discovery process.
  • Demonstrated ability or desire to participate as a member of a geographically distributed organization.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, and have a customer-focus approach; excellent interpersonal skills; incredible comfort in presenting to an audience or in being mentored to be effective in this medium.
  • Domestic travel will be required. Some international travel may be required.
  • Understanding of computer operating systems and computer architecture, especially those aspects related to overall system performance.
  • Familiarity or experience with open source software and hardware approaches that support high-speed data transfer for science including data transfer nodes, GridFTP, network performance measurement, and related concepts.
  • Knowledge related to the design and operation of LAN and WAN architectures; knowledge of common networking protocols (BGP, IP, TCP, etc.)
  • In Addition to Above, if hired at a level 4 :

  • A minimum of 8 years of professional experience that bridges network engineering concepts with developing or supporting scientists in utilizing services to improve / augment their science workflows for accelerated results.
  • BS (MS a plus) degree in Computer Science or Engineering and / or Scientific field, and / or related scientific co-design or support experience.
  • Successful experience in developing high impact strategic projects that require building consensus among stakeholders including executive level partners.
  • Experience in both serving as a leader and a collaborator on successful multidisciplinary cross-team projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle complex socio-technical problems with a high degree of autonomous decision making.
  • Notes :

  • This is a full-time, 2 years, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
  • Level 3 : The full salary range of this position is between $129,948.00 to $219,276.00 per year and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $146,184.00 to $178,668.00 per year depending upon candidates' full skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.
  • Level 4 : The full salary range of this position is between $147,984.00 to $249,732.00 per year and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $166,476.00 to $203,484.00 per year depending upon candidates' full skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.
