Position Description:
The Behavior Health Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner is a mid-level practitioner who works closely with Behavior Health Staff, as well as the Administrator and LCHD Medical Director. The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner is responsible for diagnosing and treating the mental health needs of patients, including medication prescribing, consultation, and education.
Essential functions of this position are as follows:
- Provides patient assessment, diagnosis and treatment plans in accordance with statutes, regulations and protocols regulating the profession;
- Provides psychiatric health services, education, counseling and emotional support;
- Provide services to clients of the LCHD Behavior Health Department at the main location and remote locations;
- Refers patients for inpatient care, in collaboration with crisis staff, as necessary;
- Issues medication prescriptions in accordance with treatment guidelines;
- Orders laboratory tests, interprets and explains the test results to patients;
- Provides patient education regarding medications, risks, benefits and reasonable outcome expectations;
- Communicates with patients and engages in follow-up as necessary;
- Plan, implement and evaluate patient care in accordance with the policies of the Behavior Health Department;
- Consult with the patient and other members of the mental health team to provide for acute and ongoing mental health care referral of the patient;
- Initiate and maintain accurate patient health records, appropriate legal documents and other health and nursing care reports and ensure the records are transferred as required when patients are referred;
- Participate in periodic and joint evaluation of the patient’s mental health records and services rendered, including (but not limited to) chart reviews, patient evaluations, and case outcome statistics;
- Participate in the joint review and revision of adopted protocol for medical care plans;
- Maintain absolute confidentiality in all matters relating to clients, customers, personnel, finances and other matters; and
- Perform other duties as required or assigned by the Administrator.
Qualifications:
Educational Experience:
- Valid nursing license with minimum Advanced Practice Nurse designation;
- Valid Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) license;
- Working knowledge of electronic health records and computer programs, such as Outlook, Microsoft Word and Excel;
- Excellent time management skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment; and
- Ability to interact with LCHD employees and the public in an efficient, friendly, cooperative, confidential and professional manner and to ensure great customer service is provided to everyone at all times.
